Women’s Tennis Defeats Juniata for First Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's team put one in the win column for the first time this season, securing a 7-2 victory over non-conference opponent Juniata College on Wednesday at the Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

The Lions (1-3) began the match by winning two out of three in doubles play. In the No. 1 doubles match, the duo of Emily Neil (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Caitlyn Dale (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) pulled out an 8-6 win for their first victory in doubles this season. In the No. 3 doubles spot, Jenna Bartlett (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis)/Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush) cruised to an 8-0 triumph for the pair's second doubles win.

Penn State Altoona's success continued in singles play, where the Lions took five out of six matches, including three different players recording their first collegiate singles wins.

Neil picked up her first collegiate singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over her opponent in the No. 1 match. Dale followed with her first career victory, getting a 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 2 slot. Jiayi Zhang (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) also grabbed her first collegiate win by battling to a 6-2, 6-7 (8-10), 11-9 victory in the No. 4 match.

Swain and Bartlett rounded out the day with wins in their matches. Swain prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match for her second victory of the season, and Bartlett improved to a perfect 4-0 record this season in the No. 6 spot, where she blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this weekend, as the Lions will host nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College at the Adler Tennis Courts this Sunday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m.
