Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg 3-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball earned its fifth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating conference foe Pitt-Greensburg 3-0 at the Chambers Hall Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions (8-16, 5-3 AMCC) cruised to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 win over Pitt-Greensburg (1-23, 1-7 AMCC).

Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) led Penn State Altoona in both kills and blocks, finishing the match with seven kills and three total blocks (one solo block, two block assists). Kelsey Bristol (Troy, PA/Troy) added six kills, six digs, and a block assist, and Emily Bryan (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) totaled seven digs, six assists, three kills, and two service aces.

Kaila Clawson (Altoona, PA/Altoona) posted a team-high nine digs. Lauren Moran (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) led the squad in assists and aces, putting up 17 assists and serving up three aces while chipping in six digs and three kills. Eden Taddei (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) finished with four kills and two total blocks (one solo block, one block assist).

Paige Burk (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel), Kaitlin Cassaday (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), Nicole Kiser (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle), and Velanna Skripek (Moshannon, PA/Bald Eagle) added two kills apiece. Burk also had two blocks (one solo block, one block assist) and Cassaday had one block assist, while Skripek finished with two aces.

In the first set, Penn State Altoona worked out to an early 7-1 lead, including two kills by Cannistraci and one from Bristol during that span. Pitt-Greensburg kept things relatively close for the remainder of the set, coming as close as two points from tying the score. But the Lady Lions were able to close out the set in their favor, with Taddei providing the winning point on a kill.

The Lady Lions got out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, including a kill from Cassaday and an ace by Moran. After Pitt-Greensburg tied the score 7-7, Penn State Altoona used a 9-0 run to pull away. Two late kills by Taddei provided two of the Lady Lions' final three points.

Penn State Altoona took care of business with a win in the third set. The Lady Lions opened up a 10-4 lead that included two kills by Bristol, aces from Bryan, Clawson, and Skripek, and a kill from Cannistraci and Skripek. Later, back-to-back aces from Moran helped the visitors to an 18-11 advantage, and the Lady Lions got their final two points of the set on kills from Kiser.

Next up for the Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team, the Lady Lions will host their final regular season match of the season in the Adler Arena this Saturday, October 27 against AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford. The match starts at 1:00 p.m., with the team's Senior Day ceremony occurring before the start of play.
