Women’s Volleyball Topped 3-1 at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball suffered its second loss of the season on Tuesday night, when the Lady Lions were defeated 3-1 by Grove City College.

Grove City (5-0) won the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-22 before Penn State Altoona (3-2) bounced back with a 25-21 victory in the third. But the home team closed the match out with a 25-16 win in the fourth set.

Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) tied for the team-high in kills with eight, and she also led the Lady Lions in blocks with three block assists and one solo block. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) also had eight kills while totaling a team-best 20 digs. Jenna Bauer (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) posted five kills, 19 digs, two block assists, and one solo block.

Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) led Penn State Altoona in assists and aces, accumulating 14 set assists and three service aces, to go along with nine digs. MacKenzie Reed (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) finished with eight assists.

Lauren Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) added 10 digs and two block assists, and Lexie Dorcon (Berlin, PA/Berlin Brothersvalley) totaled nine digs.

Penn State Altoona held a 4-2 lead in the first set before Grove City embarked on a 12-3 run to go up 14-7 midway through the set, prompting a timeout by the Lady Lions. The Wolverines went on to lead by as many as 10 in the match's opening set, en route to a nine-point win.

In the second set, the Lady Lions let a modest lead slip away. With the visitors up 13-9, Grove City used an 8-1 run to turn the tables and jump ahead 17-14. Penn State Altoona battled back to tie the score 18-18, but Grove City outscored the Lady Lions 7-4 the rest of the way to ultimately take the set.

Penn State Altoona stayed alive by pulling out a victory in the third set. The Lady Lions opened the set by staking out a 13-6 lead, only to have it vanish when Grove City used a 9-1 run to go up 15-14. But Penn State Altoona responded by reclaiming the lead and eventually closing the set out with a kill from Mock and a Grove City attack error.

In the fourth set, Grove City pulled away in the middle stages to win. With the score tied 11-11, the Wolverines scored six straight points to establish a 17-11 advantage. The home team went on prevail by nine points in the set, winning the match 3-1.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball's next match is this Friday, September 13, when the team travels to play Penn State Berks in a match starting at 6:00 p.m.
