Lady Lions Defeat Waynesburg 3-1

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball opened its month of October with a 3-1 victory over non-conference opponent Waynesburg University on Thursday night at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Penn State Altoona (5-8) prevailed over Waynesburg (2-12) in four sets, going 25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19.

Jenna Bauer (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) totaled a match-high 13 kills for Penn State Altoona to go along with eight digs, one solo block, and one block assist. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) added nine kills, 11 digs, and one block assist.

Velanna Skripek (Moshannon, PA/Bald Eagle) posted a match-high four service aces while finishing with three kills. Lauren Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) had a team-best 14 digs while adding three kills, two aces, and two block assists, and Sara Russo (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) had three kills and a block assist. Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) and Tara Ryan (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) finished with two kills each.

Emily Bryan (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) tallied a team-high 14 assists while adding three kills, two aces, and two block assists. Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) recorded 12 assists.

Lexie Dorcon (Berlin, PA/Berlin Brothersvalley) finished with 10 digs. Lilia Farach (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/International School of Panama) had one solo block and one block assist.

Penn State Altoona pulled away early in the first set to win the opening game. Already ahead 18-11, the Lady Lions reeled off six straight points, courtesy of kills from Russo and Skripek, a pair of aces from Diller, a combo block from Bauer and Bryan, and a Waynesburg attack error. Bryan's kill provided the 25th point of the set for Penn State Altoona.

Waynesburg responded by winning a tight second set, but Penn State Altoona did not go quietly. With the home team ahead 23-14, the Lady Lions went on a 9-1 run to narrow the gap to just 24-23. But the Yellow Jackets got a kill on the next point to nab the two-point win, evening the match score at 1-1.

Penn State Altoona came from behind to win the third set. Down 12-10, Penn State Altoona reeled off eight straight points to jump ahead 18-12, helped by six Waynesburg miscues during that stretch. A pair of kills by Mock helped close the set out in favor of the Lady Lions.

In the fourth set, the Lady Lions took control midway through the set. Leading 10-8, Penn State Altoona scored four straight points to increase its advantage to six points. Later, a kill from Bauer and Waynesburg attack error helped Penn State Altoona win the set and clinch the match.

For its next match, the Lady Lions volleyball team returns to Altoona for its first home date since August 31, as Penn State Altoona will host nearby Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Mount Aloysius College for a match on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m.
