Women’s Volleyball Splits at Gettysburg Classic

Gettysburg, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team played its first regular season matches since Fall 2019 on Saturday, when the Lions competed against a pair of non-conference opponents in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic at the Bream Gymnasium.

Penn State Altoona (1-1) lost 3-0 to host Gettysburg in its first match of the day, then bounced back for a 3-0 sweep of Penn State Berks in the second match.

Match One: Gettysburg 3, Penn State Altoona 0

Gettysburg (3-0) prevailed in straight sets, despite an overall tightly-contested match that saw the first set decided by two points and the third set go into a tiebreaker. The Bullets won the match 25-23, 25-16, and 26-24.

Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) recorded a team-high 13.0 points, finishing with 12 kills and one service ace to go along with nine digs. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) added seven kills and tied for the team-high in digs with 17.

Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) added five kills, and Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) totaled four kills. Makenna Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) and Grace Shelley (York, PA/York Catholic) chipped in three kills apiece, with Shelley also recording a solo block.

Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) posted a match-high 29 assists to go along with six digs, one kill, and one ace. Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) tied Mock for the team-high in digs with 17.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 3, Penn State Berks 0

The Lions put one in the win column in their second and final match of the day, sweeping Penn State Berks (0-4) 25-16, 25-21, 25-18.

Barnhart had a match-high 10 kills while also contributing four digs. Mock added seven kills and six digs, and Bauer finished with six kills and four digs.

Moran led all players in the match with 22 assists and three aces. Lutz again tied for the team lead in digs, recording six. Cannistraci and Shelley finished with one solo block each.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball returns to action this upcoming Wednesday, September 8, traveling to face non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College in a match beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Mock was named to the Gettysburg Classic's All-Tournament team at the conclusion of Saturday's action. The junior finished the day with 14 kills (2.33 kills per set) and 23 digs (3.83 digs per set).
