Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg
ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball used a full team effort to sweep Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg 3-0 in Wednesday night's match in the Adler Arena.
17 different players saw the floor for Penn State Altoona (11-4, 4-2 AMCC), with 12 players recording at least one point and 11 players finishing with at least one dig.
Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) had a team-high 8.5 points on seven kills, one service ace, and one block assist. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) posted 8.0 points on six kills and a pair of aces, and she also had three digs.
Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) also finished with six kills to go along with nine digs, and Taylor Kilmer (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) had six kills and one block assist. Grace Shelley (York, PA/York Catholic) added three kills, and Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) had three kills and two aces while finishing with nine digs and a block assist.
Makenna Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) had two kills, and Alison Abrashoff (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York), Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), and Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) recorded one kill apiece, with Abrashoff also contributing an ace and Port recording a block assist. Kristen Onder (Clarence, PA/Bald Eagle) served up one ace.
Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) had a match-high 21 assists, and she also notched six digs, three kills, and an ace. Abigail Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PHAA) chipped in six assists.
Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) led all players in the match in digs with 13. Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added a pair of digs.
Penn State Altoona won the first set of the match in dominant fashion, during which it posted a .321 attack percentage while capitalizing on offensive struggles from Pitt-Greensburg (2-17, 1-4 AMCC). With the score tied 2-2, the Lions ripped off six straight points on Barnhart's ace and five kills in a row, three of which came from Mock and one apiece coming from Cannistraci and Bauer. Penn State Altoona continued to widen its lead throughout the set, going up by 10 points on a Barnhart kill that made it 14-4 and boosting its advantage to 15 points on a kill by Moran that made it 21-6. The Lions scored nine consecutive points to finish the set.
The Lions got another comfortable win in the second set. A Pitt-Greensburg service error and three straight attack errors gave Penn State Altoona a modest 4-0 run, turning the Lions' early 6-3 lead into a 10-3 advantage. Kills by Port and Moran and a Myers ace helped increase the home team's lead to 15-5, and more kills from Feathers, Moran, and Abrashoff had a hand in getting the score to 19-10. Kilmer notched kills on three of the set's final five points to help Penn State Altoona secure a 2-0 lead in the match.
Penn State Altoona got 15 of its 25 third-set points courtesy of kills. Two kills from Kilmer and one from Feathers helped the Lions open up a 3-0 lead, and more kills from Myers, Feathers, and Shelley helped make it 11-7. Four consecutive Bobcat attack errors upped Penn State Altoona's lead to 15-7, and back-to-back kills later in the set by Shelley and Feathers set the home squad's advantage at 21-15. Shelley and Myers notched kills on the set's final two points to seal the win.
Next up, the Lions will host non-conference opponent Penn College in the Adler Arena for a match on Monday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. That match is the makeup of a previously-postponed match from earlier this season.
