Women’s Volleyball Loses Pair on the Road

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions competed in a tri-match hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at its Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

Penn State Altoona (7-8) started its day with a 3-2 loss to Bethany College, and the Lions finished it by being swept 3-0 by host W&J.

Match One: Bethany 3, Penn State Altoona 2

Bethany (7-8) pulled out a five-set win over the Lions in a back-and-forth match. Penn State Altoona won the first set 25-23, before the Bison nabbed a 30-28 victory in the second. The Lions responded with a 25-23 win in the third, and Bethany answered again with a 25-23 triumph of their own in the fourth set. The Bison took the fifth set 15-11 to hand Penn State Altoona the loss.

Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had a match-high 24 points on 22 kills and two service aces to go along with 24 digs. Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) totaled 11 points on 10 kills and two block assists, and Ella Hadley (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) scored 10 points on nine kills and an ace while amassing 27 digs.

Julia Emel (Woodward, PA/Penns Valley) had a team-high 27 assists to go along with 16 digs, and Madelyn Rockwell (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) put up 20 assists, 13 digs, and three aces.

Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) recorded a team-best 32 digs while chipping in six assists and three aces.

Penn State Altoona set a single-match record for attack attempts, totaling 253 as a team in the loss.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 3, W&J 0

The Lions suffered a sweep at the hands of the tri-match's hosts in their second and final match of the day, falling to the Presidents (8-7) by scores of 26-24, 25-21, and 25-13.

Simanski scored 11.5 points on 11 kills and a block assist, and Port added five points on four kills and a pair of block assists. Hadley had four points on four kills.

Emel notched 12 assists and six digs, and Rockwell had six assists while contributing four kills and an ace.

Brianna Woodring (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had a team-best eight digs, and Batrus finished with seven digs, three assists, and an ace.

Penn State Altoona returns home for its next match, when the Lions host non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College on Wednesday, September 25, at 7 p.m.
