HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team scored a combined 35 runs on Saturday afternoon, leading to a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College in games played at Houghton College.

The Lions (19-11,8-4 AMCC) have now scored double-digit run totals in seven of their last eight games. Saturday's sweep represents Penn State Altoona's sixth doubleheader sweep of the season.

"It was nice to take care of business today. We were able to keep our starters well-rested and get some reserves some extra at-bats," said Penn State Altoona head coach RJ Barnard. "The guys responded well after two tough ones on Wednesday."

Game One: Penn State Altoona 13, D'Youville 1

The Lions' offense provided 13 runs on 12 hits, while the pitching staff combined to allow just one run.

Peter Jacobs (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hill West) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs batted in, two runs scored, one walk, and one stolen base. Chase Clouser (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.

Austin Anderson (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) was 2-for-2 with one run scored, one walk, and one stolen base. George Stiuso (Milford, NJ/Gill St. Bernard's) was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and three walks. Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) finished with two RBI and two walks.

Austin Miller (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) started on the rubber and improved his season record to 2-2. In 5 2/3 innings, he allowed just one run on five hits and six walks while striking out five batters. Jaryd Palmer (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy) finished the game off, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed only one hit while recording three strikeouts.

Penn State Altoona broke the game open early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead through the first two-and-a-half innings of play.

In the top of the second, Breon's groundout brought the game's first run across. Clouser's RBI single through the right side got another run in, and Breon scored on a stolen base to make it 3-0. After that, RBI doubles from Jacobs and Stiuso, along with Catcher Cumming's (Altoona, PA/Altoona) RBI single, made it 6-0.

The Lions made it 8-0 in the top of the third, when Clouser drove in a pair with his base hit up the middle.

Justin Varney helped get D'Youville (2-19, 2-10 AMCC) on the board in the bottom of the third, when his sacrifice fly scored Khaled Numan-Ali. But Penn State Altoona came back with two runs in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) and Breon.

The Lions tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Jacobs' RBI double scored one run, and he scored on an infield error to make it 12-1. Jordan Zatawski (Oakmont, PA/Riverview) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the Lions' 13th run of the game.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 22, D'Youville 7

Penn State Altoona had an even bigger game with the bats in the second half of the doubleheader, as the team racked up 22 runs on 27 hits.

Jordan McCall (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) had a four-hit game to lead the Lion hitters, going 4-for-7 with a triple, three runs scored, and two RBI.

Four other Penn State Altoona batters had three hits apiece. Jacobs went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBI, four runs scored, and a walk. Stephen Schanne (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Grant King (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Clayton Hain (Schaefferstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon County) was 3-for-5 with four RBI, one run scored, and one walk.

Breon went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Clouser was 2-for-5 with three walks, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Anderson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Zane Leister (Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) improved his season record to 4-0 with his second complete game of the season. In nine innings, he allowed six earned runs on just five hits and one walk. Leister also recorded eight strikeouts.

The Lions got a run home in the top of the first, when Stiuso's bases-loaded walk made it 1-0.

After a scoreless second, Penn State Altoona put together a nine-run top of the third to grab a 10-0 lead. Hain's two-run single and Anderson's RBI base hit increased the Lions' lead to 4-0, and McCall's two-run triple to center brought two more runs in. Breon followed with an RBI single to left-center, then he scored on a steal. Jacobs' RBI double to left got another run in, and Schanne followed with an RBI single.

The Lions scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Breon's sac fly made it 11-0. In the fifth, it was Hain's fielder's choice grounder that drove in a run to make it 12-0.

After D'Youville got on the board by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Penn State Altoona bagged up three more runs in the sixth, as Jacobs' two-run triple and William Zdinak's (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek) RBI single to center made it 15-2.

The Spartans came back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Lions answered right away again by scoring four in the top of the seventh. Jacobs' RBI groundout preceded RBI singles from Andrew Culp (Oxford, PA/Oxford), Hain, and Luke Tama (Towanda, PA/Towanda) that increased Penn State Altoona's lead to 19-5.

The Lions added three more runs to their total in the top of the ninth. King collected one RBI on his base hit, and Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) drove in a pair with a single to right-center.

Penn State Altoona baseball ventures back into non-conference play for its next games, as the Lions will travel to Latrobe, Pa. on Tuesday, April 16 to face Saint Vincent College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
