
Bobcats Overpower Lions in Doubleheader Losses
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of visiting Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field.
Pitt-Greensburg (11-13, 6-2 AMCC) posted a 9-1 victory in game one, then prevailed 15-6 over Penn State Altoona (12-18, 3-5 AMCC) in game two.
Game One: Pitt-Greensburg 9, Penn State Altoona 1
Penn State Altoona was limited to just one run on five hits, while Pitt-Greensburg scored two in the first inning, four in the third, and three in the fifth.
Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was two of the Lions' hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 1-for-1 and walked twice, and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) went 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Fred Guarino IV (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) also had a hit, and Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) delivered an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) started on the mound and suffered his first loss of the season, after the right-hander went four innings, allowed four earned runs, and struck out two batters. Cole Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pitched the final three frames and recorded two strikeouts.
Pitt-Greensburg plated a pair in the top of the first on Thomas Smith's two-run home run just inside the right-field foul pole. The Bobcats increased their lead to 6-0 in the third, getting a two-run single to right from Smith, an RBI double to left center from Diego Santos, and a run-scoring groundout from Tyler Litts.
In the fifth, RBI singles from Neo Miller, Ben Aftanas, and James Domer extended Pitt-Greensburg's advantage to 9-0.
Penn State Altoona got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring its only run of the game. Hlivia led off with a base hit to left, then later scored on Chelli's sac fly to center.
But the Lions were unable to make up any further ground, and Pitt-Greensburg won game one by eight runs.
Game Two: Pitt-Greensburg 15, Penn State Altoona 6
Pitt-Greensburg opened up a 7-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings and never looked back, as the Bobcats won game two of the doubleheader by nine runs.
Chamberlain hit 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season, and Chelli was 2-for-2. Dominic McCaffrey (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) hit his first collegiate home run for the Lions.
Jimmy Mento (Gates County, NC/Gates County) toed the rubber for game two and suffered the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's tossed 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, and Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) tossed two innings in relief. Carter Piercey (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) pitched one inning.
Pitt-Greensburg scored its first seven runs of the game courtesy of five home runs. Solo shots by Domer and Smith in the top of the first put the Bobcats on the board, and Smith's three-run homer in the second made it 5-0. Santos and Hunter Gideons each hit solo home runs in the third as the visitors grew their lead to 7-0.
Penn State Altoona made it 7-1 in the bottom of the third. Chelli reached on a one-out single down the right-field line, and later in the frame, Ingold's groundout allowed pinch runner Bryce Smith (Elliottsburg, PA/West Perry) to score from third base.
The Bobcats added three runs to their total in the top half of the fifth, as a Ben Aftanas sac fly, Domer run-scoring groundout, and Smith RBI double made it 10-1.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the fifth, when Chamberlain's solo home run to right center, his second long ball of the season, made it 10-2.
But Pitt-Greensburg padded its lead in the top of the seventh with another homer from Smith, as his three-run shot to right put the Bobcats' advantage at 13-2.
Penn State Altoona scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh. Bryce Smith's RBI single to center scored one run, and an infield throwing error allowed Hillard to score, making it 13-4.
Miller's RBI double in the top of the eighth got another run in for Pitt-Greensburg, but Penn State Altoona struck back in the bottom half of the inning. James St. Laurent-Friend (Wake Forest, NC/Wake Forest) led off with a single into left field, and McCaffrey followed with his first career home run, as his two-run shot to left put the score at 14-6.
Pitt-Greensburg scored a run in the top of the ninth on a Zach Tyson sac fly to center to make it 15-6.
Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball will travel to Erie this Sunday, April 20, to face AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
