Baseball Falls to Behrend in Sunday Doubleheader

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona baseball team suffered a pair of losses on Sunday, when the Lions hit the road to face Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend in a doubleheader.

Penn State Behrend (20-6, 8-0 AMCC) outscored Penn State Altoona (12-20, 3-7 AMCC) 15-2 on the day, blanking the Lions 9-0 in game one before posting a 6-2 victory in game two.

Game One: Penn State Behrend 9, Penn State Altoona 0

Penn State Altoona's bats were quieted in game one of the doubleheader, as Behrend held the Lions scoreless and surrendered just three hits. The home team scored at least one run in five of six frames.

Benjamin Ettien (Media, PA/Pennstest), Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), and Joe O'Connor (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) hits for Penn State Altoona.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) got the ball in game one and took the loss after going three innings. Cole Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pitched three innings in relief.

Behrend scored a run in the bottom of the first on Daniel Boehme's RBI groundout to shortstop, and a pair of bases-loaded walks in the second inning gave the home squad a 3-0 advantage. Tyler Burick scored on an error in the third inning, and Thomas Nicely's three-run home run to left in the fourth boosted Behrend's lead to 7-0. Hank Shaffer's two-run single in the sixth made it 9-0.

Game Two: Penn State Behrend 6, Penn State Altoona 2 

Penn State Altoona broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third, getting two runs across to seize the lead.

But Behrend jumped ahead with four in the fifth, then tacked two more runs on to its total in the seventh to eventually win by four.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base for the Lions, Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had a hit, a run, and an RBI, and Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) also had a hit.

Dominic McCaffrey (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) walked three times, and Cole Strick (Windber, PA/Windber) walked twice and scored a run. Ettien recorded an RBI.

Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) started on the mound in game two and was saddled with the loss, after he tossed seven innings, yielded four earned runs, and struck out a pair. Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

The Lions scored their first runs of the day in the top of the third to take the lead. Strick led off with a walk, moved up on an error, and scored on Green's RBI single through the left side. The next batter, Hillard, singled to right center, then advanced to second on Ingold's sacrifice bunt. After a walk, Ettien's groundout scored Hillard to make it 2-0.

Behrend scored four in the bottom of the fifth to work its way in front. Silvio Ionadi's sacrifice fly to center and Mac Ciocco's RBI single to left center knotted the score at 2-2, and Cayden Turner's RBI double and Nicely's sac fly put the home team up 4-2.

In the seventh, Ciocco scored on an error before Nicely contributed an RBI single, and Behrend ultimately clinched the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 victory.|

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball returns home to face nearby AMCC rival Mount Aloysius College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23. Game one start time is set for 1 p.m.
