Lions Golf Places Ninth in La Roche Invitational

ALLISON PARK, Pa. – By the conclusion of the La Roche College Fall Invitational on Tuesday at Wildwood Golf Club, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in ninth place out of 10 teams with a score of 336.

Saint Vincent College won the event with a team score of 316, while California University of Pennsylvania was the runner-up with 318. Pitt-Bradford was the highest-placing Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team, coming in at third place with a score of 319.

"Wildwood got the best of us today. We didn't start well and failed to rebound," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle.

Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) had the Lions' best score of the day, shooting 81 on the par 71 course to tie for 18th out of 56 individuals. Luke Hoffnagle (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and Jacob Mrvos (Pittsburgh, PA/Norwin) each carded an 84 to tie for 36th place.

Carter Fischer (Bellefonte, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) finished with 87, and Cole Mori (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School) rounded out the Penn State Altoona lineup with 91.

"Jake and Cole earned their way into the lineup, and it's important for the development of the program to get guys experience away from home," said Koehle. "I'm encouraged with how they reacted throughout the round to bad swings. It will benefit us down the road."

Next up for Penn State Altoona men's golf is a trip to the Williamsport Country Club to participate in the Lycoming College Invitational on Monday, September 24 at 12:00 p.m. That event marks the third-to-last regular season invitational for the Lions before the AMCC Championships in early October.

"We are excited still from our performance this past weekend, but we realize that we need some rest and some down time heading into the AMCCs," said Koehle. "Our schedule lightens up some, and the guys' exam time is ramping up. It'll be good to shut it down for a few days and be prepared for the home stretch."
