Men’s Golf Tied for Sixth After Day One at Kuhn Invitational
MEADVILLE, Pa. – After the first day of the Allegheny College Guy & Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational at the Country Club of Meadville, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in a tie for sixth place out of 11 teams.
Host school Allegheny was in first place, shooting 301 as a team. McDaniel College held down second place with a score of 309, and Gannon University was third with 312.
Penn State Altoona shot 324 as a team in day one.
"Overall, the squad is disappointed in their score today, but there are bright spots," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "Our goal is to improve tomorrow, get rid of the opening tournament nerves, and catch a few teams ahead of us."
Ethan Yohe (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) had the Lions' top score on the day, firing 78 to tie for 17th place out of 69 individual golfers.
"Ethan knocked in three birdies today and picked up right where he left off last fall," said Koehle. "He really played solid the last six holes."
Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) tied for 25th place with a score of 80, and Jacob Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) shot 81 to tie for 29th place.
"Jimmy and Jake both had a couple tough breaks that cost them a few shots," Koehle explained. "They expect to clean up and be ready for the challenge tomorrow."
"Jimmy went birdie, eagle on eight and nine, and birdied 18," Koehle added. "The start to both nines didn't go as planned, but there's a breakout round in his future."
Luke Hoffnagle (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) shot 85 for Penn State Altoona, and Cole Mori (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School) carded an 89 to round out the Lions' five.
Penn State Altoona men's golf competes in the second and final day of the Allegheny Invitational tomorrow, Monday, September 9. Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m.
