Bearcats’ Second Half Goals Sink Lions
ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's soccer was defeated 2-0 by non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College on Thursday evening at Spring Run Stadium.
After both teams went into halftime tied 0-0, the visiting Bearcats (1-7) scored two goals in the second half to secure the win. St. Vincent got goals from Cris White and Roberto Fulweiler, with Zach D'Amico assisting on both scores.
For Penn State Altoona (0-5), Evan Cardoza (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Connor Kiley (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) tied for the team-high in shots, finishing with three apiece. They also tied for the game-high in shots on goal with two each.
Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made two saves in goal for the Lions. He is currently just seven saves away from setting a new Penn State Altoona men's soccer program record for the most all-time saves.
Penn State Altoona had the edge during the first half, outshooting St. Vincent by an 11-6 margin. But despite some scoring chances, the Lions were unable to net their first goal of the year and went into the intermission deadlocked 0-0.
St. Vincent took advantage of a scoring opportunity early in the first half to grab a 1-0 lead. D'Amico's shot in the box deflected back to White, who fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal from 20 yards out to break the scoreless tie.
The Bearcats tacked on another goal at 61:03, when D'Amico found Fulweiler with a pass in the box, and Fulweiler capitalized on a hard angle shot from the right side to make it 2-0.
St. Vincent finished the game with a slight 15-14 advantage in total shots, but Penn State Altoona held a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. The Bearcats led 12-5 in corner kicks.
Men's soccer starts Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this Saturday, September 22 in Buffalo, N.Y., where the Lions will face D'Youville College in the conference opener at 4:15 p.m.
