PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's soccer was unable to secure a spot in the upcoming Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, as the Lions suffered a 4-1 loss to conference opponent La Roche College on Tuesday afternoon at the Baierl Athletic Complex.
A win would have lifted the Lions (3-12, 3-6 AMCC) into the sixth and final spot in the AMCC Tournament, but instead, La Roche (6-10-1, 4-4-1 AMCC) punched its ticket to the conference playoffs and pushed Penn State Altoona out in doing so.
La Roche got two goals from Joaquin Vicent Franch, one goal and one assist from Kyle Harriett, and another goal from Firas Abduljawad.
Penn State Altoona drew first blood early in the first half, capitalizing on a La Roche turnover. A giveaway by the Redhawks was collected by Magd, whose shot beat the goalkeeper to his left and put the Lions on top, 1-0.
But Franch scored the next two goals, giving La Roche a 2-1 lead by the half. Franch's free kick at 10:26 curled left of the keeper and into the goal to tie the score, and his penalty kick goal at 19:42 gave the home team a 2-1 advantage.
The Redhawks doubled their goal total midway through the second half. Dante Nicholas sent a long through ball toward Harriett, who ripped a shot into the right corner of the goal at 71:29 to make it 3-1. Harriett assisted on the next goal, setting up Abduljawad on a give-and-go that resulted in a goal at 73:18.
La Roche held a 29-16 advantage over Penn State Altoona in shots attempted, and the Redhawks led 13-8 in shots on goal. La Roche also had a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.
Brad Heacock (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) led the Lions in shots on goal with two. Vikrant Kumar (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) had a team-high four shots attempted, while Evan Cardoza (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had three shot attempts.
