Late Goal Propels Lions to 2-1 Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – A penalty shot goal by Brant Aughenbaugh (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) with 1:03 remaining in the game propelled the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bryn Athyn College on Saturday afternoon at Spring Run Stadium.

Aughenbaugh finished with a goal and an assist, and Dakota Casey (Norwalk, CT/Canterbury) netted his first goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (1-4), which grabbed its first win of the year.

Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made four saves to pick up the win in goal for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 17:33, when Aughenbaugh sent a ball up the middle of the field that was collected by Casey, who dribbled past a defender and scored.

Bryn Athyn (0-3) tied the game midway through the second half. Ryan Ovecka's free kick found Owen Ovecka in the box, who headed the ball past the keeper at 69:10 to make it 1-1.

But a late foul call in the box on Bryn Athyn led to the go-ahead goal for Penn State Altoona. With 1:03 left in the second half, Aughenbaugh was awarded a penalty shot attempt. He cashed in, putting the Lions up 2-1.

Penn State Altoona finished the day with advantages over Bryn Athyn in shots (17-10), shots on goal (12-6), and corner kicks (9-5).

Aughenbaugh led the Lions in shots on goal with four and tied for the team-high in shots attempted with four. Jon Kadoch (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) and Jack Price (Unionville, PA/Unionville) also attempted four shots each, with Kadoch putting three on goal and Price sending two on goal.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer's next game is Wednesday, September 11 when the Lions will travel to play Washington & Jefferson College at 7:00 p.m.
