Swanson Sets Two Records, Lions Ascend to Ninth at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team moved up into ninth place after day two of the Oberlin College Invitational on Saturday at the Carr Pool.

With 264 points, the Lions improved on Friday's place by moving up into the ninth spot out of 12 teams. Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend continued to hold first place, totaling 845.5 points through the first two days of the invitational. Ashland University was second with 752, and Allegheny College was third with 668.

Isaac Swanson (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) qualified for two individual 'A' finals for the Lions and set a new Penn State Altoona men's swimming team record in each one of them.

Swanson placed sixth in the 'A' final for the 50 Yard Freestyle, collecting 24 points for the Lions and setting a new team record with a time of 22.12. That breaks the previous record of 22.19, set by former Lion Jim Reilly on October 31, 2009.

Later, Swanson was the runner-up in the 200 Yard Backstroke, finishing in 1:57.25 to score 28 points for his team. His time set a new Lions swimming record in that event, surpassing the previous mark of 2:01.66.

In the first event of the men's meet, Penn State Altoona secured 50 points by placing fifth in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. The squad of Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), Taylor Bohn (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville), Kieran McKee (York, PA/West York), and Swanson came together for a time of 1:30.95.

Penn State Altoona wrapped up the night's action by coming in 10th place in the 400 Yard Medley Relay, in which the team of Bohn, Greg Landis (York, PA/West York), Yaw, and McKee combined for a time of 3:54.93 to net 34 points for the Lions.

Other point-getters for the Lions included Yaw scoring six points in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 22.99, Aravind Gnanasekaran (King of Prussia, PA/Methacton) getting one point for a 1:09.46 finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Bohn clocking in at 2:07.04 in the 200 Yard Backstroke for 15 points, Michael Begany (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) earning 11 points in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:20.43, and McKee scoring 15 points for his 50.52 finish in the 100 Yard Freestyle.

Penn State Altoona men's swimming completes its weekend in the third and final day of the Oberlin Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, November 24, with preliminaries at 9:00 a.m. followed by finals at 6:00 p.m.
