Men’s Tennis Edges Bobcats 5-4 for First Win

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's tennis picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg 5-4 at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

In addition to being the first win of 2018-19 for the Lions (1-9, 1-2 AMCC), it is also the first career victory for Penn State Altoona's first-year head coach, Megan Bettwy.

The Lions jumped out to a 2-1 lead over Pitt-Greensburg (2-9, 1-3 AMCC) after doubles play. In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley)/Jaydan Jacobs (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Charlotte Amalie) earned an 8-5 win. In the No. 3 doubles match, Tyler Smolko (Loretto, PA/Penn Cambria)/Andrew Ung (Upper Chichester, PA/Chichester) teamed up for an 8-5 win.

Penn State Altoona did enough in singles play to pull out the match win, splitting the six singles matches with the Bobcats.

Jonathan D'Arcy (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over his opponent in the No. 2 singles match, picking up his second singles win of the season. Ung battled to a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 win in No. 5 singles for his second singles victory of the year, and Smolko nabbed his first singles win of the year by prevailing 6-7, 6-3, 10-4 in the No. 6 slot.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns home for a pair of matches this week. On Wednesday, April 3, the Lions will host non-conference opponent Lycoming College at 4:30 p.m. After that, Penn State Altoona will go up against AMCC opponent Mount Aloysius College on Friday, April 5 at 4:30 p.m.

Both of those matches are scheduled to be played outdoors on the campus' the Adler Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
