
Lions Lose AMCC Championship Match to Behrend
ERIE, Pa. – The No. 1 seed Penn State Altoona men's tennis team's 2024-25 season came to a disappointing end on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 2 seed Penn State Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship match at Westwood Racquet Club.
Behrend (12-8) will advance to the joint AMCC-Atlantic East conference championship next Sunday, May 4, while Penn State Altoona (11-6) is eliminated from the postseason with its loss. Following Sunday's match, Lions senior Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) and freshman Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) were named to the AMCC's All-Tournament team for their performances during the league playoffs.
Behrend scored the day's first point by earning a 6-3 win in the No. 1 doubles match and 6-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles match. It proceeded to secure wins in the No. 2, 3, and 4 singles matches to get the championship to decision, 4-1. Penn State Altoona's lone point came in the No. 6 singles match, where Lopez picked up his third singles win of the year with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 triumph over his opponent.
Penn State Altoona men's tennis finishes its season with an 11-6 overall record, including a 5-1 mark within the AMCC that ultimately gave the Lions the top seed in the conference postseason tournament. The team's overall win total marked the third consecutive season that the program achieved double-digit victories.
