Men’s Volleyball Splits Home-Opening Matches

ALTOONA, Pa. – In its first home matches of the season on Saturday afternoon in the Adler Arena, the Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team lost 3-2 to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Geneva College and won 3-0 over non-conference foe Keuka College.

Penn State Altoona (1-3, 0-1 AMCC) started its day with a loss to new AMCC opponent Geneva College (6-2, 1-0 AMCC) by a 16-25, 25-22, 27-25, 21-25, 15-13 decision.

Brian Sheddy (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) posted team-highs for the Lions with 15 kills and 18 digs, and he also finished with one solo block and one block assist. Dan Downs (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) recorded 14 kills to go along with a team-best five total blocks, notching one solo block and four block assists. Ben Beaver (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) totaled a match-high three service aces while putting up 13 kills, 12 digs, two solo blocks, and two block assists. Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added 10 kills, one solo block, and one block assist.

Danny Dry (Douglasssville, PA/Daniel Boone) and Kyle Whiteman (Northampton, PA/Northampton) tied for the team lead in assists with 26 each. Tyler Chan (Framingham, MA/Framingham) finished with 16 digs.

The Lions bounced back from defeat to sweep Keuka (2-2) by scores of 25-21, 25-12, and 26-24.

Beaver, Downs, and Sheddy each finished with 10 kills to tie for the match-high. Beaver added seven digs, Sheddy had six digs, and Downs had one solo block. Perehinec finished with three kills and a solo block.

Dry led the team with 18 assists, while fellow setter Whiteman finished just behind him with 17 assists to go along with six digs. Chan led all players in the match with 15 digs.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's volleyball will hit the road to face non-conference opponent Wilkes University on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: In the neutral site match that rounded out Saturday's tri-match in the Adler Arena, Geneva defeated Keuka 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19).
