Softball Loses Two at Behrend to Wrap Up Regular Season

ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Altoona softball completed its regular season schedule on Sunday afternoon, when the Lady Lions suffered a pair of losses in a doubleheader at Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend.

Penn State Altoona (20-15-1, 10-8 AMCC) lost game one 4-1 before falling 3-1 in game two.

Penn State Altoona struggled to find consistency at the plate and in the field in game one, as the Lady Lions were limited to one run on six hits while committing six errors.

Abby Showers (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored to lead the Lady Lions' efforts with the bats.

Emily Strouse (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) pitched all six innings and was handed the loss. She surrendered just two earned runs with six hits and two walks while recording two strikeouts.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Showers led off with a double to left field, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Meghan Marasti (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford), and scored on Haley Giedroc's (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) groundout to shortstop.

But Penn State Behrend (28-10, 14-4 AMCC) evened the score in the bottom of the first when Carson Hauser tripled and scored on Katie Gozzard's sac bunt.

Hauser's RBI single down the right field line in the fourth put the home team up 2-1. Behrend added two more runs in the fifth when Mackenzie McIntire scored on an error and Brittany Williams hit an RBI base hit.

In game two, Penn State Altoona played more cleanly in the field, committing no errors in the game. However, the team's bats were limited to producing one run on eight hits.

Showers again led her team at the plate, going 2-for-4. Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough) went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run batted in.

Sidney Shultz (Runville, PA/Bald Eagle) started in the circle, pitching five innings and giving up three earned runs in the loss. Strouse tossed one scoreless inning in relief with a strikeout.

Penn State Altoona grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Miller's RBI triple to right scored Giedroc.

But Penn State Behrend answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on McIntire's RBI single down the left field line. The home team went ahead 2-1 in the fourth on Marissa Torretti's RBI single up the middle, and McIntire's RBI groundout in the fifth increased Behrend's lead to 3-1.

With the regular season now behind them, the Lady Lions have qualified for the AMCC Tournament. Dates, times, location, and matchups will be officially announced from the conference office this week.
