
Softball Sweeps Celtics, Remains Undefeated in AMCC
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team boosted its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record to 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon, when the Lions swept league opponent Carlow University in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.
Penn State Altoona (16-8, 6-0 AMCC) won game one 5-2, then took care of Carlow (7-17, 1-3 AMCC) by a score of 7-3 in the nightcap.
Game One: Penn State Altoona 5, Carlow 2
Trailing 2-1 after three, Penn State Altoona jumped into the lead with a three-run fourth inning and never looked back, ultimately defeating the Celtics by three runs.
Allison Beeman (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), Madison Kennedy (Williamsburg, PA/Central), and Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) each had a two-hit game for the Lions. Beeman was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Kennedy went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run, and Maynard was 2-for-3 with a run.
Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) had a hit and two RBI, and Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) also had a hit.
In the pitching circle, Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) registered her 10th victory of the season in a complete-game effort. The right-hander went all seven innings and held Carlow to two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two.
Penn State Altoona used three straight two-out hits to plate the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. With two down, Beeman and Maynard singled up the middle, and Kennedy's RBI single to right center made it 1-0.
Carlow used the long ball to take the lead in the top of the third, when a two-run home run to center off the bat of McKenna Pierce gave the Celtics a 2-1 advantage.
But Penn State Altoona worked its way back on top in the fourth. With one out, Beeman and Maynard hit back-to-back singles, and Kennedy tied the score with her RBI double down the left-field line. One out later, Fisher put the Lions into the lead with her two-run single to right that put the home squad up 4-2.
Penn State Altoona added an insurance run to its total in the fifth. Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) led off the frame by reaching on a two-base outfield error, and she later came home on Karli Storm's (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) sacrifice fly to left.
The Lions maintained their three-run lead over the remainder of the contest, and Penn State Altoona clinched its fifth AMCC win of the schedule.
Game Two: Penn State Altoona 7, Carlow 3
The Lions again trailed by one run early, falling behind Carlow 2-1 through two-and-a-half innings. But Penn State Altoona's bats helped propel it to victory, as the Lions' 13 hits helped produce seven runs to beat the Celtics.
Five different Lion hitters had a two-hit performance in the win.
Storm went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and a walk, and Lauren Davidson (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk.
Fisher finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, Hoppel went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, and Lauck was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run.
Kennedy made the start at pitcher and went the distance for her fifth win of the season. In seven innings, the right-hander allowed just one earned run, seven hits, and one walk while recording three strikeouts.
Penn State Altoona took advantage of a Carlow miscue in the bottom of the first to bring in the game's first run. With one out, Davidson drew a walk, and Hoppel followed with a base hit down the left-field line. A fielding error on the play allowed Davidson to score, and the Lions carried a 1-0 lead out of the inning.
Carlow got two runs across in the top of the third, when Mackenzie Egley's groundout scored the tying run and Tatum Wiggs' RBI single up the middle gave the Celtics a 2-1 lead.
But the visitors' advantage was short-lived, as Penn State Altoona answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third. With one out, Fisher, Davidson, and Hoppel each singled to load the bases for the Lions. Lauck followed with a two-run double to right, and Storm came next with a two-run double of her own to give Penn State Altoona a 5-2 lead.
The Lions picked up another run in the fourth with some two-out action. After two outs, Davidson singled to right, Hoppel walked, and Lauck singled to left. With the bases loaded, Storm's walk plated Davidson to make it 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kennedy led off with a base hit to right center and later scored on Maynard's RBI double to left center, increasing the Lions' advantage to 7-2.
Carlow added a run to its total in the top of the seventh on an Egley RBI single, but Penn State Altoona was still able to successfully close the game and finish with a four-run victory for AMCC win number six.
Next up, the Penn State Altoona softball team will hold its Senior Day celebration at its next games, when the Lions host AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader this Saturday, April 12, starting at 1 p.m.
