Softball Drops Pair at Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona softball team took two losses on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions wrapped up their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule on the road against Hilbert College in a doubleheader at Frontier High School.

Hilbert (12-15, 7-7 AMCC) overcame early deficits in each game to pull out wins, posting victories of 8-3 and 10-5 to sweep Penn State Altoona (20-13, 10-6 AMCC) in the doubleheader.

Game One: Hilbert College 8, Penn State Altoona 3

The Lions worked their way out to a 3-2 lead after two-and-a-half innings, but Hilbert scored six unanswered runs the rest of the way to prevail by five in game one.

Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI, while Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) finished 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Jillian Taylor (Irvona, PA/Glendale) also had a hit.

Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) spun a complete game in the circle, yielding six earned runs across six innings while recording six strikeouts.

Penn State Altoona made it 1-0 in the top of the first inning, when Fisher led off with a base hit to center, moved up to second on Hoppel's one-out single, and scored on Lauck's RBI hit to right field.

Hilbert responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, as Alana Yadov's two-run home run to center put the home team in front.

The Lions jumped ahead after getting a pair of runs across in the top of the third. With a runner on and one out, Hoppel's RBI single to center tied the score, and Lauck followed with another RBI base hit to right that put Penn State Altoona ahead, 3-2.

But the Hawks again answered quickly to reclaim the lead. In the bottom of the third, Samantha Heppel's sacrifice fly to center evened the score at 3-3, before Yadov's RBI single to left put Hilbert up by one, 4-3.

In the fourth, Emma Gionta's two-run double to center and Kaitlin Stolowski's two-RBI single to right extended Hilbert's advantage to 8-3. The Hawks limited Penn State Altoona to just one base runner the rest of the way, ultimately dealing the Lions a five-run loss in game one.

Game Two: Hilbert 10, Penn State Altoona 5

Much like game one of the doubleheader, Penn State Altoona was able to grab an early lead, as the Lions scored the game's first four runs. Hilbert chipped away, and Penn State Altoona found itself clinging to a 5-4 lead in the fifth. But the Hawks surged ahead with a six-run bottom of the fifth to hand the Lions a five-run loss.

Lauren Davidson (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Hoppel went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run, and Lauck hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. Fisher had a double, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.

Madison Kennedy (Williamsburg, PA/Central) got the start at pitcher and took the loss after tossing four innings. Sidney Nihart (Ashville, PA/Cambria Heights) pitched two innings in relief.

The Lions jumped on Hilbert early, getting three runs home in the top of the first. Fisher's walk and Davidson's single started the inning, and Hoppel followed with an RBI single to left to bring in Penn State Altoona's first run. Davidson scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0, and Lauck's RBI single to right gave the Lions a three-run advantage.

In the top of the second, Fisher reached base on a two-out Hilbert error, stole second, then scored on Davidson's RBI base hit to left.

Hilbert got on the board in the bottom of the second, thanks to a Mackenzie Catan RBI infield single. The Hawks got another run in the home half of the third, when Emily Lacki tripled and scored on Stolowski's groundout.

Hilbert proceeded to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth on Catan's two-run single to center, but Penn State Altoona got back in the lead in the next half inning. With two outs, Lauck's single and Karli Storm's (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) walk kept the inning alive, and Kennedy came next with an RBI hit to put the Lions up 5-4.

But the Hawks seized the lead emphatically with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jazlynn Soliz's RBI infield single tied the score, and an Ava Higgins sac fly gave Hilbert a 6-5 advantage. After that, Hilbert used a Miyah Lopez two-RBI double, a Gionta RBI single, and a Lacki run-scoring fielder's choice to increase its lead to 10-5, which it held for the remainder of the day.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona softball team will close its regular season schedule at home on Monday, April 28, when the Lions welcome non-conference opponent Susquehanna University to Stewart Athletic Field for a doubleheader. Game one first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
