ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling team finished off its weekend in the Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational on a high note, going 2-1 on Sunday at Holiday Bowl to end up in seventh place out of eight teams.

The third and final day of the Red Flash Invitational consisted of three best-of-seven baker matches, with the matchups set in a bracket and seeding determined by each team's total pinfall through the first two days of competition.

The Lady Lions entered Sunday's bracket as the eighth-place team, but Penn State Altoona was able to ascend into seventh place after recording a pair of wins.

"We were able to go 2-1 on the day, and it was refreshing to finish the weekend on a positive note," said Penn State Altoona head coach John Carey. "It's nice to end on a victory, and it gives us something build on for next week's conference competition."

In its first match of the day, Penn State Altoona went up against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Penn State Behrend. After losing the opening game and tying the second game, the Lady Lions came back to win four straight to record the comeback victory over their conference opponent by a score of 4-1-1 (104-138, 118-118, 125-119, 145-109, 156-111, 165-104).

Next, Penn State Altoona was matched up with Kutztown University. The Bears swept the Lady Lions 4-0 (200-118, 143-105, 175-100, 203-136).

After the loss, Penn State Altoona faced a familiar opponent, Penn State Behrend, in a battle for seventh place. The Lady Lions handled Behrend for the second time in the day, prevailing 4-1 (161-131, 112-107, 137-128, 123-140, 181-148) to finish the Red Flash Invitational in seventh place overall.

Host school St. Francis came back to win the weekend, defeating Mount Aloysius College 4-3 in the championship match. Mount Saint Mary's University came in third place.

Now, the Penn State Altoona women's bowling team will prepare to enter the thick of its AMCC schedule. Carey was encouraged by his team's showing this weekend, and he believes that the Lady Lions are finding their stride as they enter conference play.

"Amanda [Amanda Ickes] was consistent each day. Nikki [Nicole Watt] was able to step up when we needed a strong finish," said Carey. "Everyone else contributed and also improved."

Penn State Altoona women's bowling will compete in the first of two regular season AMCC Round Robin weekends on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3 at Hilbert College. The second AMCC Round Robin is Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 at New Jersey City University.

The two AMCC Round Robins ultimately determine seeding for the conference championship, which is slated for Saturday, March 23 at Sim's Lanes in Beaver Falls.
