Lady Lions Fall 3-1 at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer came out on the losing end of Wednesday night's non-conference game at Westminster College, losing 3-1 to the Titans.

Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored her first collegiate goal for the Lady Lions (1-2) in the loss. Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made a career-best 11 saves in goal.

Westminster (3-0) took little time grabbing the lead, as the Titans found the back of the net just 8:10 into the game. Melissa Thomas set up Alexandria Applin, who scored on a shot from the middle of the box to make it 1-0.

Thomas scored a goal of her own at 22:37, taking a cross from Kayla Trozzi and beating the goalkeeper to the far post to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.

Just 2:39 into the second half, Irwin netted her first goal to cut into Westminster's lead. Jenna Mickel (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) earned her first collegiate point with the assist, setting up Irwin, whose strike from 25 yards out made it 2-1.

But Westminster added a big insurance goal to its total at 78:05 on a penalty kick. Keely Birsic scored on the attempt, increasing her team's lead to 3-1.

The Titans led 21-8 in total shots, 14-3 in shots on goal, and 8-0 in corner kicks.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer returns home for its next game, as the Lady Lions will face non-conference opponent Chatham University on Tuesday, September 12 at Spring Run Stadium. That contest is slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
