Women’s Soccer Loses 1-0 Heartbreaker to W&J

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's soccer took a tough loss on Thursday night, falling 1-0 to non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College in the pouring rain at Spring Run Stadium.

Despite playing a sound defensive game and outshooting the visitors, Penn State Altoona (3-5-1) lost on the game's only goal in the 89th minute. It marked the third consecutive 1-0 loss for the Lady Lions.

Washington & Jefferson (3-5-1) broke a scoreless tie at 88:43, when Marcy Saldivar launched a shot from 30 yards out that found the top shelf of the goal.

Penn State Altoona held a strong 15-9 advantage over Washington & Jefferson in shots attempted, and they also had a 6-5 lead in shots on goal. The Lady Lions also got three corner kicks to the Presidents' one.

Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) and Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for 12 of Penn State Altoona's 15 shots, tying for the game-high with six shots each. McConnell also had a game-best four shots on goal, while Irwin had two shots on goal.

Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) posted a strong effort in goal for the Lady Lions, making four saves.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, September 29, when it wraps up its three-game homestand with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Spring Run Stadium against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford.
