Lady Lions Shut Out Hilbert 3-0

ALTOONA, Pa. – In its final regular season home game of the fall, the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College at Spring Run Stadium.

The win helped to solidify Penn State Altoona's (8-6-2, 4-3-1 AMCC) standing in the upcoming AMCC postseason tournament. By the end of Saturday's action, the Lady Lions' 4-3-1 conference record put the team in fourth place. A win in its final game of the regular season would lock Penn State Altoona into home field advantage in the first round of the AMCC playoffs.

Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) scored two goals while adding one assist for Penn State Altoona. Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) added one goal for the Lady Lions.

Riley Barrett (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy) made two stops in goal for Penn State Altoona to record her fifth victory of the season and her fourth shutout of the year.

McConnell netted her first goal of the afternoon at 11:28, taking a long lead pass from Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and scoring in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper to put Penn State Altoona up 1-0.

The Lady Lions proceeded to score their next two goals in the span of 1:09. Giedroc made it 2-0 at 32:18, when she took a pass from McConnell in the box and finessed a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. McConnell scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season at 33:27, getting a long pass from Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) and converting in another one-on-one with the keeper to increase her team's lead to 3-0.

Penn State Altoona posted a big 24-5 advantage over Hilbert (0-15, 0-8 AMCC) in shots attempted, and the Lady Lions also led 13-2 in shots on goal. The home team also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

McConnell led all players in the game with nine shots on goal and a total of 10 shots attempted. Her 10 shots are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in Penn State Altoona women's soccer history.

Irwin added six shot attempts, while Giedroc and Jennifer Worley (Altoona, PA/Altoona) finished with two shots each.

Lady Lions soccer will wrap up its regular season on the road, when the team heads to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 23 to face AMCC opponent La Roche College at 1:00 p.m.
