Women’s Tennis Notches First Win

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis picked up its first win of the 2019 season in its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the schedule, as the Lady Lions edged conference foe D'Youville College 5-4 at Miller Tennis Center.

D'Youville (0-2) managed an early lead by winning in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches. Penn State Altoona (1-2) picked up a victory in No. 2 doubles, where the duo of Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park)/Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) pulled out an 8-6 win.

The Lady Lions turned the tables on D'Youville in singles play, as Penn State Altoona won four out of six to come from behind and take the match win.

Acker won her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles, and Girol posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 singles spot. Grace Butz (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had the deciding win for Penn State Altoona in a tightly-contested No. 6 singles match, where Butz won 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (3-7), 10-8.

Penn State Altoona continues its western New York road trip tomorrow, Sunday, September 8, when the Lady Lions take on AMCC opponent Medaille College at 11:00 a.m.
