
Women’s Tennis Tops Penn College in Season Finale
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team put the finishing touches on its 2024-25 season on Friday evening, when the Lions defeated non-conference opponent Penn College, 5-2, at the Central PA Tennis Center.
Penn State Altoona (10-11) swept doubles play for the first point of the match, then won four out of six in singles play to hand Penn College (2-15) a three-point match loss.
In No. 1 doubles, the team of Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys)/Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) posted a 6-0 win for their fifth win together this season. In the No. 2 spot, Mara Del Valle (Colombia/Walt Whitman)/Lydia Um (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) teamed up for a 7-6 (10-8) triumph for their first win as a duo. The Lions picked up a forfeit win in the No. 3 doubles match, and Penn State Altoona took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In the No. 1 singles match, Blessel earned her fifth victory of the season by pulling out a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win. Daniel Fulton (Milford, DE/Milford) prevailed 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 match for win number eight on the season, and Chelsea Napper (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands Ranch) registered her first collegiate singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 slot. Penn State Altoona won the No. 6 match via forfeit, and the Lions' four points in singles gave them a three-point victory over the Wildcats.
Penn State Altoona women's tennis finishes its 2024-25 season with a 10-11 overall record. Last fall, the Lions went 3-2 within the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, placing third in the league's regular season standings.
