Lady Lions Lose Dutchmen Quad Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – In the opening match of this weekend's Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen Quad, the Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to host school Lebanon Valley on Friday night in the Sorrentino Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions (1-6) were defeated 25-9, 26-24, 25-16 by Lebanon Valley.

Emily Bryan (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led Penn State Altoona in both kills and assists, accumulating six kills and 10 set assists. She also swung a team-best .286 clip. Kaitlin Cassaday (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) finished with five kills and one service ace, and Kelsey Bristol (Troy, PA/Troy) had five kills to go along with six digs and an ace.

Nicole Kiser (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) posted a team-high eight digs. Lauren Moran (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) chipped in seven assists.

Penn State Altoona struggled to find its rhythm in the match's opening set. Lebanon Valley (2-4) went ahead by 16 points, 19-3, when Jess Attieh recorded a kill. The Dutchmen kept their 16-point lead later in the set on Amanda Sides' kill, and the home team finished out the set by getting points on another Attieh kill and a Penn State Altoona attack error.

In the second set, Lebanon Valley got out to a 5-0 lead, but Penn State Altoona was able to overcome its deficit. The Lady Lions used an 8-3 run that included kills by Bryan and Bristol to tie the score 8-8. One point later, three straight Lebanon Valley errors helped Penn State Altoona to grab an 11-9 advantage. Later, the Lady Lions used an ace from Bristol, a kill by Bryan, and a bad set by the Dutchmen to come one point away from closing out the set, grabbing a 24-19 lead. But Lebanon Valley proceeded to score the next seven consecutive points to come back and win the set, closing it out on an ace from Sides.

In the third, Bristol's kill kept the score tied 5-5 in the early going. But Lebanon Valley outscored the Lady Lions 20-11 from there on out, expanding its lead throughout the remainder of the game and closing the third set out on a kill from Attieh.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball wraps up the Dutchmen Quad tomorrow, Saturday, September 8 by playing Franklin & Marshall College at 11:00 a.m. and Penn State Berks at 2:00 p.m.
