Women’s Volleyball Falls to Westminster, Franciscan

LATROBE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team competed in the second and final day of the Bearcat Challenge, hosted by Saint Vincent College, on Saturday afternoon at the Robert S. Carey Center.

Penn State Altoona (0-4) was saddled with two more losses, as the Lions fell 3-0 to Westminster College in the day's opening match before being defeated 3-1 by Franciscan University in the second match.

Match One: Westminster 3, Penn State Altoona 0

Westminster (3-0) pulled out a tightly-contested 26-24 win in the first set, and the Titans wrapped up victory with 25-16 and 25-18 wins in the second and third sets.

Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) led Penn State Altoona with nine points on eight kills and a solo block, while Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) had seven points on six kills and a service ace. Barnhart also accumulated 11 digs.

Abigail Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PHAA) posted a team-high 13 assists to go along with eight digs.

Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) totaled a match-high 18 digs, while Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) contributed 13 digs. Jadeyn Price (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tallied two block assists.

Match Two: Franciscan 3, Penn State Altoona 1

Franciscan (1-2) won the first set 25-17 before Penn State Altoona bounced back to take the second set, 25-19. But the Barons earned wins of 25-19 and 25-13 in the third and fourth sets to claim victory in the match.

Simanski finished with 15 points to lead the Lions, totaling 14 kills and an ace while adding nine digs. Barnhart contributed 11.5 points, getting seven kills, a match-high four aces, and a block assist to go along with 11 digs.

Gabriella Serra (Queens, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) recorded a team-best 22 assists while chipping in eight digs.

Batrus notched a match-leading 27 digs.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball is back in action on Tuesday, September 5 for its next match, when the Lions host their first home event of the season versus non-conference opponent Wilson College at 7 p.m.
