Women’s Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball competed in a non-conference tri-match hosted by Stevenson University on Saturday at the Owings Mills Gymnasium, and the Lions added a win and a loss to their totals by the conclusion of the day.

Penn State Altoona (5-9) took down Penn State Berks 3-1 in the day's first match before being swept 3-0 by host Stevenson in the nightcap.

Match One: Penn State Altoona 3, Penn State Berks 1

The Lions won the day's first set 25-23 before Berks (2-8) answered with a 25-22 victory in the second set to even the match score at 1-1. But Penn State Altoona responded with strong wins in the third and fourth sets, winning them 25-18 and 25-16 to take the match.

Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had a team-high 15 points for Penn State Altoona on 14 kills and a service ace, and she also contributed 18 digs. Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) scored 11.5 points on seven kills and a match-high five total blocks, racking up four solo blocks to go along with one block assist.

Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) had 9.5 points on eight kills, one ace, and one block assist, and Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) totaled 8.5 points on six kills, two aces, and a block assist to go along with 17 digs.

Julia Emel (Woodward, PA/Penns Valley) had a team-best 22 assists, and Abigail Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PHAA) added 14 assists while serving up a team-high three aces.

Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) posted a match-high 28 digs.

The first set was tightly contested until Penn State Altoona pulled away enough in the latter stages. With the score tied 15-15, the Lions went on a 6-1 run to construct a five-point lead. A Berks attack error got Penn State Altoona to set point, 24-18, but Berks scored five straight points to make it a one-point score difference, 24-23. But Myers' kill provided the set-winning point for Penn State Altoona on the next play, and the Lions closed out the opening set 25-23.

The second set followed a similar script, this time with Berks pulling away to earn a tight win. After the score was tied 16-16, a 5-0 run from Berks gave them a 21-16 advantage. Penn State Altoona got back to within one, 23-22, but Berks scored the following two points to win the set 25-22 and tie the match score at 1-1.

Penn State Altoona took an early lead in the third set and protected it throughout. After Berks scored the first three points, Penn State Altoona went on a 5-1 run, and back-to-back kills from Simanski put the Lions up 5-4. An ace from Batrus gave Penn State Altoona a 12-8 lead, and a kill from Myers expanded it to 15-9. Two more Simanski kills put the Lions' lead at 20-12, and Penn State Altoona finished the set with consecutive kills from Barnhart and Jadeyn Price (Altoona, PA/Altoona) to end it at 25-18.

Berks again scored the first three points of the fourth set and worked its way out to an 8-3 lead. But Penn State Altoona used an 8-1 run to jump ahead, including getting two aces from Brinker. Later, the Lions got four consecutive kills – two from Simanski and one apiece from Barnhart and Myers – to make it 19-13, and a Barnhart ace put her team up by seven, 20-13. Port contributed two kills late in the set, and Brinker closed out the match with her third ace of the set, ending the game at 25-16 and helping Penn State Altoona to a 3-1 win in the match.

Match Two: Stevenson 3, Penn State Altoona 0

Stevenson (12-3) overpowered Penn State Altoona in three sets in the Lions' second and final match of the day, as the home team prevailed 25-9, 25-20, and 25-16.

Myers led the way for Penn State Altoona with 6.5 points on three kills, a team-best three service aces, and a block assist. Barnhart had six points on five kills and an ace, while also finishing with 10 digs. Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) added 5.5 points on five kills and a block assist.

Emel put up 10 assists for the Lions, and Gabriella Serra (Queens, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) chipped in seven assists.

Batrus again led the team in digs, this time recording 15.

Stevenson started the first set by establishing a commanding lead, scoring the first 11 straight points. Penn State Altoona got to within nine points late in the set, but the home team ultimately won by 16, 25-9.

Penn State Altoona started the second set with a 4-2 lead, including getting a kill from Feathers and a duo block by Feathers and Myers. But Stevenson scored five straight points to grab the lead, and the Mustangs never relinquished it the rest of the set, leading by as many as nine points. Penn State Altoona closed the gap to two late in the set, following Myers' kill and two aces that trimmed the Mustangs' advantage to 22-20. But Stevenson proceeded to score the next three points to win the second set, 25-20.

A Feathers kill and Barnhart ace helped Penn State Altoona to an early 2-1 lead in the third set, but Stevenson worked in front after that and never yielded its advantage, going ahead by as many as 10 points and eventually winning the set 25-16 to clinch the sweep of the Lions.
