Penn State Altoona Athletics Announces 2023 Hall of Fame Class

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona Athletics Advisory Council announced its second Hall of Fame class on Monday, naming four individuals and two teams to join the inaugural 2021 class. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, April 29 in the Adler Athletic Complex.

Selected to the Penn State Altoona Athletics Hall of Fame were Olana "Tick" Hedrick-Sheaffer (Women's Volleyball Coach, Instructor, Athletic Trainer, 1973-2008), Courtney (Carroll) Stoner (Women's Basketball, 2007-11), Barry Crawford (Men's Basketball, 1980-82), Kevin Lazzaro (Men's Golf, 2003-04), the 1972-73 Wrestling Team, and the 1973-74 Men's Basketball Team. Hedrick-Sheaffer enters the Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Achievement Inductee.

"The Athletics Advisory Council is proud to host our second Hall of Fame induction ceremony, honoring the accomplishments and legacy of our student-athletes dating back to 1939," said Tom Koehle, chair of the Athletics Advisory Council. "This group of inductees served the college with distinction, produced championships, set records, and established levels of success for the current generation of student-athletes to set their sights on."

  • Hedrick-Sheaffer led the Women's Volleyball program for 28 years during her tenure at Ivyside, guiding the program to 29 various conference and state championships. She was named Coach of the Year 13 times across four conferences.
  • A Bishop Guilfoyle grad, Courtney (Carroll) Stoner still ranks among the all-time leaders in several statistical categories for women's basketball. Stoner holds top-ten all-time ranks in points, points per game, field goals, assists, and steals, among others.
  • Crawford hails from Northern Bedford and was a standout for the men's basketball team, leading the Cougars in scoring in both his freshman and sophomore campaigns. He scored in double figures in 48 of 49 career games.
  • Lazzaro, a Bethel Park native, claimed the top spot in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Golf Championship and was named All-AMCC in both 2003 and 2004. He was voted AMCC Newcomer of the Year in 2003, while leading the golf program to its first AMCC Championship.
  • The 1972-73 Wrestling Team, in only its second season, claimed the Penn State Commonwealth Campus Championship with just two returning wrestlers.  Coach Denny Lott's squad crowned three individual Commonwealth Campus champions, John Stanczyk (Somerset), Ron Hillegass (Chestnut Ridge), and Lew DeAngelis (Bishop Carroll), while five others placed in the top three of their weight classes.
  • Filled with local talent, the 1973-74 Men's Basketball Team, coached by Tom Brouse, defeated the Beaver Campus 71-67 in the Commonwealth Campus Championship Game. John "Goose" Marin, an Altoona High grad, scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the title game. Fellow Altoona High grad Galen Bickel was the team captain and leading scorer for a squad that went 16-4 overall and tacked on a Commonwealth Campus Western Division title.

The Penn State Altoona Athletics Advisory Council considered many criteria in its inductee selection process. Membership as a regular inductee is open to individuals and teams who have, by their participation as undergraduate student-athletes in the Penn State Altoona Intercollegiate Athletics program, performed at a high level of athletic excellence. Special inductees may earn membership through their involvement and/or accomplishments in athletics or athletically-related areas after attending Penn State Altoona, and/or by their example, character, and life accomplishments that set standards of excellence worthy of induction.

"Penn State Altoona has such a rich athletics history," said Brent Baird, Director of Athletics. "This year's class is another example of great athletes and exemplary people.  The Penn State Altoona community is so proud to have these individuals and teams inducted into our Hall of Fame."
