Baseball Splits with Calvin in Florida Opener

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team started its week in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by splitting a doubleheader with Calvin University on Saturday at Northeast Regional Park.

Calvin (4-5) posted an 8-1 victory in game one, before Penn State Altoona (2-2) bounced back for a 1-0 shutout win in game two.

Game One: Calvin 8, Penn State Altoona 1

Calvin established an early lead and grew it throughout the game, while Penn State Altoona was unable to generate runs to keep pace.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) went 2-for-4 with a double for Penn State Altoona. Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-4 with the Lions' lone run scored, and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College), Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College), Anthony Iannizzi (Leesburg, VA/Heritage), and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) also accounted for one hit apiece.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) got the start at pitcher for Penn State Altoona and was saddled with the loss, going five innings and yielding four earned runs. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) pitched two innings out of the bullpen.

Calvin put the game's first run on the board quickly, getting one across in the top of the first inning on a Caden Penn RBI single through the right side.

Penn State Altoona answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a two-out error to tie the score at 1-1. With two away, back-to-back singles by Alauzen and Hillard put two runners aboard for the Lions. In the next at-bat, Chamberlain reached on an infield error, allowing Alauzen to score from second to even the score.

The Knights reclaimed the lead on a Dylan Williams sacrifice fly to left in the top of the second, and Calvin increased its advantage to 4-1 in the fourth when Matt Raymond scored on a throwing error and Will Mueller came home on a wild pitch.

Calvin made it 6-1 in the fifth, using a Ryan Brown sac fly to center and an RBI base hit to left by Raymond to boost its lead to five runs. The Knights plated two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Carson Warners.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 1, Calvin 0

The second game of the doubleheader followed a much different script, with both teams combining for just six hits in an errorless contest. Penn State Altoona scored the game's only run early, and the Lions rode out their lead the rest of the way.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) started on the mound and got the win, improving to 2-0 this season. The left-hander worked five shutout innings, limiting Calvin to only three hits and two walks while striking out a pair. Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings, allowing no hits and one walk, striking out two batters, and picking up his first save of the season.

Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage), Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), and Hillard had Penn State Altoona's hits, and Chamberlain scored the Lions' run.

Penn State Altoona made it 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Chamberlain led off the frame and reached base when he was hit by a pitch, then moved up to second base on a wild pitch. The next batter, Rauch, drew a walk, and Barberich singled to load the bases. Penn State Altoona hit into a double play in the next-at bat, but Chamberlain scored from third to put the Lions on the board.

While Penn State Altoona was unable to add to its lead, the Lions put up zeroes to keep Calvin off the scoreboard and finish with a tight win.

Penn State Altoona baseball returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 5, facing Illinois College for a doubleheader at Northeast Regional Park. First pitch for game one is set for 10 a.m.
