Thunder Rolls Past Lions

SANFORD, Fla. – Penn State Altoona baseball suffered a sweep at the hands of Trine University on Friday, as the Lions lost both ends of a doubleheader at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Thunder (6-5) blanked Penn State Altoona (3-7) in game one by a final score of 7-0, then held on to defeat the Lions 7-4 in game two.

Game One: Trine 7, Penn State Altoona 0

The Lions were unable to get into a groove at the plate for the second straight game, suffering a 7-0 loss to Trine. The Thunder got a complete game shutout from Josh Hoogewerf, who went all seven innings and struck out nine batters.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) got the start on the bump for Penn State Altoona and took the loss, pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out six. Joshua Fleck (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) pitched one inning in relief.

Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen), Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel), Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) accounted for the Lions' four hits.

Trine wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, putting up a run in the top of the first. Matthew Martin reached on an infield error and later scored on Cory Erbskorn's RBI double down the left field line.

Erbskorn struck again for the Thunder in the third inning, driving in two more runs with another double to left to give Trine a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, the Thunder picked up another run on a two-out Lion error, as Daniel Rumberger doubled, then scored on a throwing error to make it 4-0.

Trine upped its lead to 7-0, scoring two in the sixth on a two-out single from Martin and adding a run in the seventh when Joel Walton scored on a stolen base.

Game Two: Trine 7, Penn State Altoona 4

Trine completed the doubleheader sweep by defeating Penn State Altoona by three runs in game two.

Chamberlain, Rauch, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) had RBIs for the Lions, and Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) took the mound for Penn State Altoona in game two and went the distance in the loss. Over six innings, he allowed three earned runs while scattering five hits, walking two, and striking out three.

Penn State Altoona scored its first run of the day in the top of the first inning, when Hlivia doubled to left-center, stole third base, and scored on Chamberlain's RBI single through the right side.

Trine struck back in the bottom of the first, producing a run on Walton's RBI groundout to tie the score at 1-1. The Thunder proceeded to go ahead 3-1 in the second, when Rumberger's sacrifice fly to center and Robert Kortas' steal of home added a pair of runs to Trine's total.

The Lions retied the game in the top half of the fourth, as Richard contributed an RBI double to right-center and then stole home to even the score at 3-3.

But Trine responded quickly, getting four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two of the Thunder's four runs in the inning came home on an outfield error, and Adam Stefanelli's sac fly made it 7-3.

Penn State Altoona was able to narrow its deficit to three in the top of the fifth, getting an RBI single up the middle from Rauch to bring the Lions to within 7-4.

Penn State Altoona baseball completes its week in Florida tomorrow, Saturday, March 11, with a doubleheader against John Carroll University at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
