Baseball Snaps Skid with Sweep of Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team got back in the win column on Thursday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep of non-conference opponent Waynesburg University on the road.

Penn State Altoona (5-9) broke its seven-game losing streak in game one, posting a 5-0 shutout victory over Waynesburg (3-7). The Lions completed the sweep with a 5-3 win over the Yellow Jackets in game two.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 5, Waynesburg 0

Penn State Altoona snapped its skid with a convincing shutout of Waynesburg in game one of Thursday's twinbill.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout to pick up his first win of the season. Over seven innings, the right-hander struck out five batters and walked just two.

Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-3 with his first collegiate home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) had a double and an RBI. Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) walked three times.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the top of the third inning. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) started the frame by drawing a walk, moved up to second on a Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a balk. Chamberlain followed with a base hit up the middle to drive in the Lions' first run of the day.

Penn State Altoona doubled its lead in the fourth, when Rauch led off with a single and came around to later score on an infield error, making it 2-0.

The Lions proceeded to put three on the board in the fifth. Carey and Chamberlain started the inning by drawing back-to-back walks, and Hillard's double scored Carey to make it 3-0. After an out was recorded on a play at the plate during Hillard's double, Rauch homered to left to give Penn State Altoona a 5-0 lead.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 5, Waynesburg 3

The Lions overcame a one-run deficit late in the game, rallying for two runs in the sixth to take the lead and then tacking on one more in the seventh.

Rauch continued his strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 in game two with a triple, two RBI, and one run scored. Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was also 2-for-3, recording an RBI and a run scored, and Hillard went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

The Lions also got another solid performance on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader. Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) got the start and recorded his team-leading third win of the season, as the left-hander went six innings, yielded two earned runs, and struck out a pair. Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) notched his second save of the season, pitching a spotless seventh inning with one strikeout.

Waynesburg picked up its first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single through the left side from Todd Burner.

But Penn State Altoona answered with two in the top of the second. Hillard led off with a walk, and Rauch followed with a triple to center to tie the game at one. Alauzen put the Lions up 2-1 on the next play, grounding out to shortstop to drive in Rauch.

Waynesburg tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Dalton Mount's RBI triple, and the Yellow Jackets grabbed a 3-2 lead on Bryce Bedilion's RBI single in the fifth.

Penn State Altoona reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, however, thanks to a pair of key two-out hits. With Ingold and Chamberlain on base with two outs, following walks drawn by each player, Hillard came up with an RBI double to left to tie the score at 3-3, and Rauch singled to right to drive in the go-ahead run.

The Lions added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, when Alauzen led off with a base hit, moved up to second on a Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) sac bunt, and scored on a Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) RBI double.

Penn State Altoona returns to action this Sunday, March 19, heading to Pittsburgh to face non-conference opponent Chatham University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
