Lions Downed by Chatham

PITTSBURGH – Penn State Altoona baseball faced off against non-conference opponent Chatham University on Monday night, with the Cougars prevailing 14-2 in a single game at West Field.

Chatham (6-6) established a 6-0 lead through the first three innings, then broke the game open with a seven-run fourth. Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona (5-10) was limited to just two hits while struggling to get into a groove at the plate.

Fred Guarino IV (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) drove in Penn State Altoona's only runs on a pinch-hit, two-run triple. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk, and Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) drew a walk and scored a run.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) started on the mound for the Lions and took the loss after tossing 3 2/3 innings. Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief.

Chatham put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first. The Cougars got a single and a walk to start the frame, and Cody Lehman's triple drove in both runners for the home team's first runs of the evening. Lehman scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.

Chatham doubled its lead in the third, helped by a pair of Lion errors that extended the inning. The Cougars' leadoff runner reached on an error, and with two outs, another base runner got on via an error. After a walk loaded the bases, Dylan Vogel cleared them with a three-run double to make it 6-0.

The Cougars went on to plate seven runs in the fourth, including a pair of two-run hits by Tyler Cote and Jake Bredl. Brandon Greiner's RBI double in the fifth increased Chatham's lead to 14-0.

Penn State Altoona spoiled Chatham's shutout bid in the top of the seventh. With one out, Hickey drew a pinch-hit walk and Hillard reached after being hit by a pitch. Guarino pinch hit in the next at-bat, tripling to right to knock in two runs.

Penn State Altoona baseball gets back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21, for its home opener. The Lions will host non-conference opponent Thiel College for a pair of seven-inning games at Stewart Athletic Field, with game one slated to start at 1 p.m.
