Baseball Swept by Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of non-conference opponent Wilson College on Wednesday afternoon at Henninger Field.

In game one, a late push by Penn State Altoona (8-13) came up short, as the Lions took a 5-4 loss. In game two, Wilson (13-5) overpowered the Lions by a final score of 12-4.

Game One: Wilson 5, Penn State Altoona 4

Wilson worked its way out to a 4-0 lead through five innings. Meanwhile, the Lions were held hitless until the top of the sixth, when Penn State Altoona broke up the no-hit and shutout bids by putting three runs on the board. But the Phoenix ultimately held on for a one-run victory.

Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) started at pitcher and was saddled with the loss, going five innings and surrendering four runs. Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) tossed one inning out of the bullpen, yielding one run.

Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) had a double and two runs batted in, while Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) had a double and one RBI. Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI, while Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) each finished with a hit and a run scored.

Wilson made it 1-0 when Gerald Buchanan led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run, and the Phoenix doubled its advantage in the third when Dean Mercer doubled and later scored on a throwing error.

Mercer's two-out, two-run single to left in the fourth extended Wilson's lead to 4-0.

Barberich registered Penn State Altoona's first hit of the day with his two-out single through the right side in the top of the sixth. The hit helped wake up the Lions' bats, as Alauzen followed with an RBI single up the middle and Carey produced a two-run double to right, cutting the Wilson advantage to 4-3.

The Phoenix tacked an important insurance run on to its total in the bottom half of the sixth, when Mercer's sacrifice fly to right made it 5-3.

Penn State Altoona again narrowed its lead to one in the top of the seventh. Hlivia started the frame with a base hit to center, and Rauch was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat. Chamberlain's double down the left field line scored Hlivia, bringing the Lions to within one, 5-4. After a strikeout gave Wilson the first out of the inning, Barberich was intentionally walked to load the bases. However, Penn State Altoona was unable to capitalize, as the Phoenix retired the next two batters to end the game.

Game Two: Wilson 12, Penn State Altoona 4

Wilson's bats led the way for a Phoenix win in game two, as the home team scored 12 runs on 16 hits.

Barberich and Chamberlain each went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Penn State Altoona. Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) had a double and three RBI, and Hlivia went 1-for-1 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.

Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) made the game-two start for Penn State Altoona and took the loss after pitching three innings. Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, and Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) tossed 1 2/3 innings out of the pen.

Wilson again established an early lead, as the Phoenix scored three runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a two-run single from Alex Seidleck and an RBI single from Brady Andre.

Penn State Altoona answered with three runs of its own in the next half inning, tying the score 3-3 in the top of the second. The first three hitters of the inning reached for the Lions, as singles from Barberich and Alauzen and a walk by Hlivia loaded the bases. After two outs were recorded, Richard came through with a bases-clearing double to right-center to even the score at three runs apiece.

The Phoenix reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the second on a Michael Marrale RBI single, but Penn State Altoona knotted the score at 4-4 in the top of the third on Hlivia's sacrifice fly that scored Chamberlain.

However, Wilson scored four runs in the bottom of the third to jump ahead for good. Andre scored on an error before Jordan McKenzie's RBI single made it 6-4. Later in the inning, Garrett Griebel scored on a wild pitch, and Marrale added an RBI double to left to make it 8-4.

The Phoenix added four more runs in the fifth on a McKenzie RBI double, RBI singles from Marrale and Seidleck, and a Lion error.

Penn State Altoona baseball's next games will be this Sunday, April 2, when the Lions are scheduled to travel to play Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Alfred State College for a doubleheader. The games will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at Bolivar-Richburg High School in Bolivar, N.Y.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 1, but it was rescheduled to Sunday due to the expectation of inclement weather.
