Eagles Sweep Lions in Wednesday Twinbill

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team was handed a pair of lopsided losses on Wednesday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field, as visiting non-conference opponent Juniata College swept a doubleheader with the Lions.

Juniata (4-16) jumped out to big early leads in both games of the twinbill, defeating Penn State Altoona (8-17) by scores of 11-5 and 18-7.

Game One: Juniata 11, Penn State Altoona 5

Juniata led 8-0 after two-and-a-half innings, and the Lions were unable to dig out of their early hole.

Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen), Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona), and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each had a two-hit game for Penn State Altoona. Carey was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, Green went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, and Rauch went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

Rauch started on the mound and suffered the loss, as the left-hander pitched one inning and surrendered four unearned runs. Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) tossed 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, and Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief.

Juniata staked out a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Joey Woodrow and Matthew Quigley each hit RBI singles while Connor Meisner and Caden Collins drew bases-loaded walks. David Beard's two-run double in the second and Michael Warren's two-run single in the third handed the visitors an 8-0 advantage.

Penn State Altoona cut its deficit in half over the next two innings.

In the third, Green led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on Rauch's double down the left field line. Later in the frame, Grant Barberich's (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) RBI groundout scored Rauch.

In the fourth, the Lions got two runners aboard after Carey led off the inning with a walk and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) doubled to right-center field. Green's infield hit to second base drove in Carey, and Rauch followed with a single into right field to score Hlivia and make it 8-4.

But Juniata responded with three runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 11-4 on Warren's two-run double to right and Beard's RBI infield hit to shortstop.

Penn State Altoona picked up a run in the bottom half of the fifth, when Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) singled to right and later scored on an infield throwing error.

Game Two: Juniata 18, Penn State Altoona 7

Juniata jumped out to another strong lead early in the ballgame, as the Eagles put a seven spot on the board in the top of the first. While Penn State Altoona was able to respond with four runs in the bottom of the first, the Eagles answered with six runs over the next two innings to widen the gap for good.

Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each had a three-hit game for Penn State Altoona. Donovan finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ingold was 3-for-3 with his second home run of the season, two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Cavan Beck (York, PA/Northeastern) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) got the game-two start at pitcher and suffered the loss. Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel), Joshua Fleck (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon), Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's), and Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) all made relief appearances for the Lions.

Juniata got seven runs across in the top of the first inning, including a two-run home run to right center from Warren and a two-run double to right center by Dakotah Snyder.

Penn State Altoona countered with four runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) started the frame with a single to left, and Ingold followed by blasting a pitch over the right field fence to make it 2-0. After Dominic McCaffrey (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) walked and Donovan singled, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) got McCaffrey home on a sacrifice fly to right, and Beck plated Donovan on an RBI single through the left side.

But Juniata got all four of those runs back in the top of the second, getting RBI singles by Beard and Quigley and a two-run single from Eric Soccio to make it 11-4.

Penn State Altoona got a run in the bottom of the second, when Ingold led off with a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the frame.

After the Eagles scored a pair in the third, Penn State Altoona made it 13-6 on a two-out RBI single to left from Beck.

Juniata expanded its advantage to 17-6 in the top of the fifth, aided by a trio of Penn State Altoona errors.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions recorded their seventh run of the game when Chelli drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

Juniata made it 18-7 in the seventh, when Charlie Bakken reached on an error and later came home on a fielder's choice groundout.

Penn State Altoona baseball resumes Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this Saturday, April 8, when the Lions travel to face nearby league rival Mount Aloysius College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
