Mounties Deal Lions Close Losses in Doubleheader

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team took a pair of close losses on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions were swept by Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College in a doubleheader at Calandra-Smith Field.

In game one, a late comeback by Penn State Altoona (8-19, 1-5 AMCC) fell short in a 5-4 loss. Mount Aloysius (8-13, 2-2 AMCC) overcame a deficit in game two, winning it 8-6 to take both ends of the doubleheader.

Game One: Mount Aloysius 5, Penn State Altoona 4

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Mount Aloysius scored three runs to take the lead. Penn State Altoona scored two in the sixth, but the Mounties hung on to win by one.

Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, one run scored, and a stolen base, while Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) finished with two RBI.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) got the start on the rubber and suffered the loss after going 3 2/3 innings. Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) pitched a strong 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, giving up no runs, hits, or walks while recording three strikeouts.

Joshua Brown's sacrifice fly put Mount Aloysius on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but Penn State Altoona answered with two runs in the top of the second. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) started the inning with a walk, and Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) singled to right field to put two aboard. Alauzen's fielder's choice plated Hillard, and Hlivia's fielder's choice later in the frame scored Alauzen to make it 2-1.

The Mounties tied the score in the bottom half of the second, when Aidan Bell led off with a base hit and came around to eventually score on a wild pitch.

Mount Aloysius used a three-run fourth to go ahead 5-2. Ryan Bushey's RBI single down the left field line broke the tie, and Ryan Lynn drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run. Later in the inning, Tyler Quade stole home to put the Mounties up by three.

Penn State Altoona made a push in the top of the sixth. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) started the inning with a single to left, and Barberich walked with one out. Alauzen's base hit up the middle plated Chamberlain, and a sac fly from Hlivia scored Barberich to make it 5-4. But with the tying and go-ahead runs on base, the Lions were unable to do any further damage in the inning, and Mount Aloysius ultimately held its one-run lead.

Game Two: Mount Aloysius 8, Penn State Altoona 6

Penn State Altoona led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Mount Aloysius tied the score with a four-run inning, then went ahead with a pair of runs in the eighth to win game two.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) started on the mound and was solid in five innings of work, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters. Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) pitched 2/3 inning in relief, and Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) tossed 2 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Hillard went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Alauzen was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk, and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk.

Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 1-for-2 with a walk, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Green's total of three steals ties the Penn State Altoona baseball record for the most stolen bases in a game.

Penn State Altoona grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Hillard led off with a double down the left field line, then scored on Alauzen's double to right center one batter later.

The Lions scored two runs after loading the bases with no outs in the top of the third. Green led off with a base hit to left, Ingold walked, and Rauch reached on a bunt single to put three runners aboard for Penn State Altoona. Chamberlain followed with a sacrifice fly to center, and Hillard made it 3-0 with his single to left center.

Mount Aloysius got on the board in the bottom of the third to close the gap to one run. Bell's fielder's choice groundout brought in one run, and Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-2.

Penn State Altoona capitalized on a two-out miscue by Mount Aloysius in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Green reached on catcher's interference, then stole second to move into scoring position. Ingold singled up the middle to score Green, putting the Lions' lead at 4-2.

The Lions came up big with two outs again in the top half of the sixth inning. Hlivia reached on a one-out single through the left side, and Green walked to put two runners on base. A fly out allowed Hlivia to advance to third, and Green swiped his third bag of the game to also move into scoring position. Rauch took advantage in the next at-bat, driving in both runs with his base hit through the right side that made it 6-2.

But Mount Aloysius loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and was able to get four runs across to tie the score. Quade and Bell drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks, and Zack Peck's sac fly to center made it a one-run game. Lynn's RBI single evened the score at 6-6.

The Mounties grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth, getting an RBI double to left from Brown and an RBI single through the left side by Lynn to go ahead 8-6. The Lions were retired in order in the top of the ninth, and Mount Aloysius clinched the doubleheader sweep.
