Lions Snap Skid in Sweep of Chargers

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team broke its eight-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference opponent Lancaster Bible College.

Penn State Altoona (10-19) established an early lead in game one, en route to a 13-2 victory. In game two, the Lions blanked Lancaster Bible (8-19) by a score of 6-0.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 13, Lancaster Bible 2

Penn State Altoona broke its eight-game skid with a lopsided win in game one of the doubleheader, as the Lions put 13 runs on the board to tie for their second-highest run output in a game this season. Penn State Altoona hit four home runs as a team to tie for the most homers in a game in Lions history.

The Lions' Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 2-for-2 with his first two collegiate home runs, finishing the game with four runs batted in, three runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the year, three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 2-for-4 with his first homer of the season, a double, two runs scored, and a walk.

Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) was 1-for-2 with a double, four runs scored, two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 1-for-2 with two RBI, two walks, and a run scored.

Penn State Altoona utilized four pitchers in what was a staff game for the Lions. Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) opened the game with two scoreless innings while striking out three batters, and he was awarded his first collegiate win on the mound. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched the next two innings, yielding one earned run while recording three strikeouts. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) pitched perfect fifth and sixth innings, and Joshua Fleck (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) finished the game with a scoreless seventh.

After the game opened with two scoreless innings, Penn State Altoona put four runs on the board in the top of the third. Hlivia reached on an error by the shortstop and later scored on an error by the catcher to put the Lions on the board. One batter later, Chamberlain's three-run homer to right center extended the Penn State Altoona advantage to 4-0.

The Lions used the long ball to add two more runs to their total in the top of the fourth. Carey's one-out solo shot to center gave his team a five-run lead, and after a walk to Hlivia, Green's two-run homer to center made it 7-0.

Lancaster Bible got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a home run by Brian Coburn and an error that allowed Harrison Hobdy to score.

But Penn State Altoona kept the runs coming in the sixth and seventh innings. In the top of the sixth, a two-run single from Ingold and an RBI double by Barberich made it 10-2. Hlivia's RBI double in the seventh preceded another two-run homer from Green, his second of the game, that made it 13-2.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 6, Lancaster Bible 0

The Lions held Lancaster Bible to just five hits in game two while scoring six more runs of their own, including hitting two more home runs.

On the mound, Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) got the start and registered his fourth victory of the season. The left-hander pitched six scoreless innings, scattering five hits and walking only one batter while striking out five. Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) struck out the side in a scoreless seventh inning.

At the plate, Green went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Hlivia was also 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and his first home run of the season, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) hit his third homer of the year.

Like in game one, the Lions again broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Hlivia led off the inning with a double, then came home on Green's RBI single to left. Green stole second base and later scored on Chamberlain's two-out base hit to right, making it 2-0.

Richard's solo home run to left center in the top of the fifth increased Penn State Altoona's lead to 3-0. In the sixth, Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) reached on a two-out single, and Alauzen followed with his first home run of the season to make it 5-0.

Penn State Altoona got another run across in the top of the seventh, when Hlivia started the inning with a single and later came home on a Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) sacrifice fly to left.

Penn State Altoona baseball gets back to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play for its next games, as the Lions return home to face Pitt-Bradford in a doubleheader this Saturday, April 15. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
