Baseball Sweeps La Roche, Extends Win Streak

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team increased its winning streak to six consecutive games on Wednesday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field, where the Lions recorded their first doubleheader sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche University since the 2011 season.

The Lions (14-19, 5-5 AMCC) used a big inning in each game of the doubleheader to sweep La Roche (11-17, 2-6 AMCC) for the first time since April 20, 2011. A five-run second inning in game one propelled Penn State Altoona to a 6-1 win, while a seven-run fourth inning in the nightcap broke the game open in a 10-5 victory.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 6, La Roche 1

The Lions' game-one victory was keyed by a five-run bottom of the second, along with strong pitching that limited La Roche to just one run on four hits.

Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 1-for-3 for the Lions with his third home run of the season, three runs batted in, and a stolen base. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk, and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) also hit 1-for-2 with a run scored. Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) was twice hit by pitches and scored two runs.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) started on the mound and recorded his fifth win of the season. In six innings, the left-hander allowed just one run, four hits, and two walks while striking out two batters. Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.

La Roche got on the board first in the top of the first inning, with a solo home run to left center by Nathan Stutz gave the visitors an early advantage.

But Penn State Altoona jumped ahead by getting five runs across in the bottom of the second inning. Hillard led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch, and Alauzen's single to right center put two runners on base. After Alauzen moved up to second base on a throw after his base hit, Carey drove both runners in with a seeing-eye bouncer through the left side to make it 2-1. One batter later, Hlivia was hit by a pitch, and Green followed with a three-run homer to left-center field to extend the Lions' lead to 5-1.

Penn State Altoona loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, after Hlivia was hit by a pitch for the second time, Green reached on an infield throwing error, and Rauch drew a walk. Corey Chamberlain's (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) walk brought Hlivia home to make it 6-1.

Homan, Meengs, and the Lions held La Roche scoreless after the opening frame, helping Penn State Altoona achieve a comfortable five-run win.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 10, La Roche 5

Leading 3-2 through three-and-a-half innings, Penn State Altoona put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to turn its one-run lead into an eight-run advantage, en route to a five-run victory.

Green led the Lions with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Rauch went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Hillard was also 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season, two RBI, and a run scored.

Hlivia walked twice and scored two runs, and Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

After finishing game one, Meengs started game two on the mound and tossed four innings in a no decision. The left-hander struck out three batters while scattering three hits, walking two, and yielding two runs.

Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to record his first collegiate victory on the mound, allowing just one walk while striking out one batter. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) also tossed a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen, surrendering no hits or walks while registering three strikeouts. Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pitched 2/3 inning, and Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) recorded the final out of the game.

La Roche scored a run in the top of the first inning when Zach Keib led off with a walk and later scored on a balk.

Penn State Altoona got three runs across in the bottom of the third to work its way in front. Hlivia walked and McClain reached on a bunt to start the inning, and Green loaded the bases on his infield hit that deflected off of the second-base umpire. Rauch got Hlivia home on a fielder's choice, and McClain also raced home on the play when La Roche committed a throwing error. After a pitching change, Green scored on a double play groundout to put the Lions up 3-1.

The Redhawks narrowed their deficit to 3-2 in the top half of the fourth, when Josh Dreyer's two-out RBI single to left made it 3-2.

But Penn State Altoona padded its lead by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Lions loaded the bases with one out, following Alauzen's double, Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) being hit by a pitch, and another Hlivia walk. McClain cashed in with his RBI single to right, and Green followed with a two-run double to right to make it 6-2. After another La Roche pitching change, Rauch delivered a two-RBI single through the right side, and Hillard blasted a two-run homer to left to put the Lions up 10-2.

La Roche scored three runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Dreyer and a two-run single from Keib.

Penn State Altoona baseball continues its schedule this Friday, April 21, when the Lions will travel to Hamburg, N.Y. to take on AMCC opponent Hilbert College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. That twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 22, but it was moved up to Friday to avoid impending inclement weather.
