Hilbert Deals Lions Pair of Walk-off Losses

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College rallied past the Penn State Altoona baseball team in both games of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at the FSSJ Complex, coming from behind to defeat the Lions in both ends of the twinbill in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Games of the Week.

Hilbert (20-14, 7-5 AMCC) overcame a 5-2 deficit in game one to win 6-5 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. In game two, Penn State Altoona (14-21, 5-7 AMCC) took a 15-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but the Hawks staged an incredible 10-run comeback to win again.

Game One: Hilbert 6, Penn State Altoona 5

Penn State Altoona led 5-2 through four-and-a-half innings, but Hilbert rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, and the Hawks proceeded to score the game-winning run in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lions with two doubles, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base, and Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) recorded one RBI.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) started game one on the rubber and pitched well but was saddled with the loss. Wiles went five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four batters. Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, yielding one run and striking out a pair.

Penn State Altoona scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Green led off with a double down the left field line, and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners. Chamberlain's double to left scored Green, and Alauzen's groundout to second plated Rauch. Richard followed with an RBI single, scoring Chamberlain to make it 3-0.

Hilbert answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as Sebastian Gomez and Jairo Santos each hit RBI singles to bring the home team within one, 3-2, of the Lions' lead.

Penn State Altoona got a run back in the top of the fourth. Alauzen led off with a double, advanced to third on Richard's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Carey's sac fly to right.

The Lions added a little more breathing room to their lead in the top half of the fifth. After Green reached on an error earlier in the frame, Chamberlain's two-out double to center scored him to put Penn State Altoona up 5-2.

But Hilbert came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 5-5. Patrick Whelan's two-run home run got the Hawks back to within one, and Gomez scored on a two-out error later in the inning to even the score at five runs apiece.

The tie score remained until the bottom of the seventh, when Ben Chowaniec's pinch-hit RBI single to left provided a walk-off win for Hilbert.

Game Two: Hilbert 16, Penn State Altoona 15

Penn State Altoona produced its second-largest run total of the season, putting 15 runs on the board on 17 hits. The Lions led 15-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but Hilbert pulled off a wild comeback to win, capped by a walk-off two-run homer. The Hawks scored 10 runs in the home half of the ninth, including getting eight runs across with two outs.

Chamberlain went 4-for-5 with a double for Penn State Altoona. Rauch hit 3-for-5 with his third home run of the season, three RBI, and two runs scored, and Alauzen was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Green finished 2-for-7 with his team-leading fourth home run of the season, a double, four RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base. Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk. Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) was 1-for-1 and walked three times, scored two runs, and had one RBI. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) recorded two RBI.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) started game two at pitcher and finished with a no decision. In six innings, Lockett yielded five earned runs while striking out five Hilbert batters. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief, and Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) finished the game and shouldered the loss.

Hilbert scored first, getting runs on Whelan's sac fly to left and Santos' RBI single to center in the bottom of the first inning.

Penn State Altoona responded with a four-run top of the second to jump ahead. Green and Rauch hit back-to-back home runs, with Green blasting a three-run homer to left and Rauch knocking a solo shot to right-center field. The Lions increased their lead to 5-2 in the top of the third, when Hlivia's two-out RBI single to center upped his team's advantage to three.

Hilbert came back with three runs in the bottom half of the third to tie the game. Gomez's RBI double, along with run-scoring singles from Santos and Jack Duffek, knotted things up 5-5 for the Hawks. The home team took its first lead since the first inning in the bottom of the fourth, when Thomas Evans' solo home run to center put Hilbert up 6-5.

Penn State Altoona reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth. Hillard's fielder's choice allowed McClain to score from third, and Alauzen's RBI single to right got the Lions in front, 7-6.

The visitors added three more runs to their total in the seventh. Rauch delivered a two-run single up the middle, and he later scored on an infield error to make it 10-6.

Penn State Altoona continued scoring in the eighth. McClain drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home one run, and Green's fielder's choice allowed another to score. Hlivia and Green each scored on passed balls, and the Lions led 14-6 by the conclusion of the inning.

Penn State Altoona tacked one more run on to its lead in the top of the ninth, when Alauzen led off with a single and later came home on another passed ball.

But Hilbert was able to find its way back from a nine-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, back-to-back RBI doubles from Evans and Whelan started the scoring. After a fly out made it two outs in the inning, Santos' RBI single drove in another run for the Hawks. Consecutive errors by the Lions resulted in two more Hilbert runs scoring, and RBI hits from Chowaniec and Emmauel McClain narrowed the Hawks' deficit to two. Chowaniec scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game, and Evans followed with a two-run homer to center to give Hilbert another walk-off win.

Penn State Altoona baseball returns home for its next games, which will represent the Lions' last non-conference games of the season. Penn State Altoona will host non-conference foe Penn College for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field on Tuesday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
