Lions Best Mounties to Advance in AMCC Tourney

CRESSON, Pa. – Penn State Altoona baseball won the rubber match of this weekend's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament first round, best-of-three series, as the number six seed Lions defeated number three seed Mount Aloysius College 10-4 on Sunday in game three of the series at Calandra-Smith Field.

With the win, Penn State Altoona (17-25) advances in the AMCC Tournament, while Mount Aloysius (17-20) is eliminated. The Lions continue to the AMCC championship series, hosted by number one seed Alfred State College this Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. The Lions will be matched up against number two seed Penn State Behrend on Thursday at 4 p.m. for their first game of the championship rounds.

The Lions earned a convincing win in game three on Sunday, carrying over their offensive momentum that was established in game two yesterday. Penn State Altoona produced 10 runs on 11 hits while limiting Mount Aloysius' scoring opportunities throughout the day.

Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lions with his second home run of the season, three runs batted in, two runs scored, and a walk. Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) recorded two RBI.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) started on the mound and finished with a no decision, going 1 1/3 innings. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) entered in relief and tossed three scoreless frames to notch his first win of the season. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) added 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, recording six strikeouts while allowing just one earned run. Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) finished the game in the ninth inning.

Penn State Altoona drew first blood in the top of the first. Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) took a one-out walk, then made it to third base on an infield error during the following play. Chamberlain's sacrifice fly to center allowed Green to score, making it 1-0.

The Lions added two more runs to their total in the top of the second. Carey led off with a walk, and Alex Hlivia's (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) one-out hit put two runners aboard. Carey scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0, and Grayson McClain's (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) groundout to shortstop brought Hlivia home to give Penn State Altoona a three-run lead.

Mount Aloysius plated a pair in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Lions' lead to one. Ryan Bushey doubled and Troy Emert singled, and both runners later scored on wild pitches to make it 3-2.

But Penn State Altoona responded with a big two-out swing in the top of the third to expand its lead to four. Barberich and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each walked to start the inning, and with two outs later in the frame, Carey's three-run homer to left field increased the Lions' advantage to 6-2.

Penn State Altoona kept the runs coming in the fourth. McClain reached on a base hit into right field with one out and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) followed with an RBI single up the middle, and after another passed ball, Barberich's double down the left field line drove in Hillard. Chamberlain's two-out RBI single to right scored Barberich, extending Penn State Altoona's lead to 9-2.

The Mounties and Lions exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the home half of the sixth, a James Rice sac fly scored Tyler Quade, making it 9-3. Penn State Altoona responded in the top of the seventh, when Chamberlain was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later scored on a wild pitch, putting the Lions' lead back at seven.

The Mounties picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth, when John Griffin doubled to lead off the frame and later came home on a double play groundout. But the Lions shut the door on any comeback thoughts by Mount Aloysius, forcing the home team to leave the bases loaded to end the game.
