Baseball Sweeps Rival Mounties

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team posted a big doubleheader sweep on the road Wednesday, recording a pair of wins over nearby rival Mount Aloysius College, the first-place team in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference standings, at Calandra-Smith Field.

The Lions (16-15, 7-5 AMCC) put together a dominant win in game one, blanking Mount Aloysius (19-14, 9-5 AMCC) 10-0 to start the day. Penn State Altoona held on for an 11-7 victory in the nightcap to secure its third doubleheader sweep of the season.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 10, Mount Aloysius 0

Penn State Altoona jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, adding five more runs to its total the rest of the way while holding the Mounties off of the scoreboard.

Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout for the Lions to earn his fourth win of the season. The right-hander held Mount Aloysius scoreless over seven innings of work, allowing just two hits and one walk while recording four strikeouts.

Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, three runs batted in, one run scored, and one walk. Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The Lions struck for five runs in the top of the first inning to establish a strong lead from the get-go. McClain led off with a single, then moved up to second on a Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) sacrifice bunt. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) reached on a throwing error to put two runners aboard, and McClain and Hillard scored on back-to-back base hits from Chamberlain and Rauch. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) singled in the next at-bat, and an outfield error by the Mounties allowed Chamberlain and Rauch to both score on the play. Jimmy Mento's (Corapeake, NC/Gates County) RBI groundout to third brought Ingold home, and Penn State Altoona bult a 5-0 lead.

The Lions picked up another run in the second. Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) drew a leadoff walk, and McClain followed with a base hit into left field. Both runners moved up on another Green sacrifice, and Hillard's RBI groundout to shortstop increased Penn State Altoona's lead to 6-0.

The visitors maintained their six-run lead until the seventh, when they added four more to their total to reach double digits. With one out, Green doubled and stole third base, and Hillard reached on a walk to put runners at the corners. A fielding error on the next play let Green score from third, and Rauch followed with a two-run double to left center. After a Mount Aloysius pitching change and a groundout, Tyler Gordon (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored from third base on a passed ball to make it 10-0.

Seick and the Lions retired Mount Aloysius in order in the bottom of the seventh for the second time in the game, and Penn State Altoona wrapped up a strong shutout victory in game one.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 11, Mount Aloysius 7

The Lions' bats again produced well in game two, putting 11 runs on the board. Penn State Altoona was helped by its lineup drawing 11 walks, tying for the seventh-most walks drawn in a game by the team. Green worked four walks himself to tie for the team's single-game walks record.

In addition to walking four times, Green finished with four RBI, two runs scored, his first home run of the season, and a stolen base. Mento went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Ingold was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk, and Hillard went 2-for-6 with his third homer of the spring, one RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base.

McClain finished with three walks and two runs scored, and Rauch walked twice and scored a pair of runs. Hlivia had a double, an RBI, and a run, and Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) tallied an RBI.

On the mound, Brycen Flinton (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made the start and earned his first collegiate win. The left-hander went six innings and allowed five runs while striking out one batter.

Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) tossed two innings out of the bullpen, giving up one run and recording two strikeouts. Chamberlain pitched the ninth, allowing no earned runs with one strikeout.

Following a similar script to game one, Penn State Altoona used a big inning to stake out an early lead, as the Lions got six runs across in the top of the second. Rauch led off with a walk, Ingold reached on an infield hit, and both runners moved into scoring position on a Mento sac bunt. Donovan's groundout scored Rauch from third, and Hlivia followed with an RBI double to right center, making it 2-0. After McClain was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to put two runners on, Green hit a home run to right center to increase Penn State Altoona's advantage to 5-0. The Mounties changed pitchers, but the new arm was greeted by a Hillard solo home run to right center in the next at-bat, which gave the Lions a 6-0 lead.

Penn State Altoona scratched across two more runs in the top of the third. Rauch and Ingold started the frame with walks, and Mento's bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. One batter later, Rauch was awarded home when the Mounties' pitcher was called for a balk. A McClain walk loaded the bases with two outs, and Green drew a free pass to score Ingold, making it 8-0.

Mount Aloysius scored its first runs of the day in the bottom of the third, getting RBI hits from John Griffith, Joshua Brown, and Tyler Weber to cut into Penn State Altoona's lead.

The Lions got a run back in the fourth, thanks to back-to-back two-out hits. Ingold's double down the left-field line kept the inning alive, and Mento followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 9-3.

Penn State Altoona capitalized on a Mount Aloysius error in the fifth to score its 10th run of the game. McClain drew a two-out walk and made it to third base after a Green walk and a wild pitch. An infield error in the next at-bat let McClain come home, pushing the Lions' lead to 10-3.

Another Mount Aloysius error helped the Lions score a run in the top of the seventh. With one out, Green walked, advanced to second on Hillard's base hit, and then stole third to put runners at the corners. Hillard stole second in the next at-bat, and a throwing error on the steal attempt let Green score to make it 11-3.

Mount Aloysius answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh, when a Tyler Quade two-run homer to right made it 11-5. Quade's RBI single to left in the eighth brought the Mounties back to within five runs, 11-6.

Mount Aloysius made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, but Penn State Altoona was still able to escape with the victory. With two runners on and two outs, a throwing error allowed one run to score, and the Mounties made it 11-7, bringing the tying run into the on-deck circle. But Chamberlain induced a foul out for the third and final out of the frame, and the Lions iced a four-run win.

Penn State Altoona baseball has its last road games of the regular season this Friday, April 26, when the Lions will head to Hamburg, N.Y. to face AMCC opponent Hilbert College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
