Golf Has Record-Setting Performance in Day Two at Zoar

DOVER, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team set two new program records during Sunday's round at Zoar Village Golf Course, the second and final day of this weekend's Gatorade Collegiate hosted by Wooster College.

The Lions finished the day with a score of 289 to set a new Penn State Altoona golf program record for the lowest team score in a round, surpassing the previous record of 296.

"I am excited for the bar we have set for ourselves this season. We have a young group, but they are talented and proved today they can hang with the best in our region," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "Breaking the school record was one of our goals this season. To do it in our second round of the year is unexpected, but not surprising."

Additionally, junior Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) set a new team record for the lowest score in a round, shooting 68 to lead the way for the Lions. His 4-under par score on Sunday, combined with his Saturday score of 77, put him in a tie for sixth place individually out of 58 golfers by the end of the event.

"I'm thrilled for Andrew and his new school record. He has put so much time in this summer to push himself competitively, and the hard work paid off today," Koehle said. "He was disappointed in his score yesterday, and it was nice to see him respond and accomplish one of his personal goals."

Penn State Altoona placed fourth out of 11 teams by the end of the two-day tournament, rising three spots from their place after Saturday's opening round. Capital University won the event with a tournament-record 565 two-day team score, while Westminster College was the runner-up with 580 and host Wooster was third with 589.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) shot 71 on Sunday, finishing tied for 27th place with a two-day combined score of 152. Heffelfinger's second round score of 71 is tied for the third-lowest score in a round in team history.

Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) fired a 74 on Sunday, combining for a two-day score of 147 that placed him in a tie for 11th individually. Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) carded a 76 in Sunday's round, posting a two-day score of 153 to rank in a tie for 30th place. Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) shot 77 on Sunday, totaling 155 over two days to finish the weekend in 34th place.

"It was a total team effort, but our second-year leaders, Andrew and Trey, led the bounce back from yesterday with two stellar rounds," said Koehle. "I'm certain it's the first time in school history that we have had two under par rounds in the same round."

Next up, Penn State Altoona will compete in head-to-head match play against non-conference opponent Westminster College on Tuesday, September 14 at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier. The match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
