Men’s Golf Places Second in Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team put together another strong round on Saturday afternoon, the second and final day of this weekend's Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

The Lions shot 295 in day two, which was hosted by Mount Aloysius College at Summit Country Club, to compile a two-day score of 598, placing Penn State Altoona in second out of nine teams. The Lions' 295 is the second-lowest score in a round in program history.

Defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Westminster College won the two-day event with a combined score of 589.

"We are keeping our early season momentum going with two great days. Despite letting a few shots slip on day one, we were right in things today. Hats off to Westminster once again. Their upperclassmen just played so well," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "To shoot the second-lowest round in school history and back up a good day at home puts us in a great spot, in terms of confidence heading to a regional event at Allegheny next weekend."

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team Penn State Behrend took third place with 641, and AMCC school and day two host Mount Aloysius placed fourth with 653. AMCC teams Pitt-Bradford and Pitt-Greensburg came in fifth and sixth, respectively, with scores of 678 and 680. Landmark Conference school Juniata College placed seventh with 691, and AMCC school Hilbert College was eighth with 737.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) shot 72 on Saturday, finishing with a two-day score of 145 to place third individually out of 60 golfers in the tournament. Iain Murphy-Herndon (Oldsmar, FL/Saddlebrook Prep) shot a team-low 70 in Saturday's round, finishing with a combined score of 149 to take fourth place.

Heffelfinger's score of 72 is tied for the fourth-lowest score in a round in Penn State Altoona golf history, while Murphy-Herndon's score of 70 tied for the second-lowest score in a round in program history.

"I can't say enough about Trey. He has put in some hard work and found his game over the last two weeks. Once his putter gets hot, he could really take a great step toward being one of the best players in the region," said Koehle. "I'm so thrilled for Iain. He has battled to find his form after a brief layoff, but has stayed patient and trusted that his game would round into form. Today's round was a product of his talent, but more importantly, his patience."

Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) took seventh place on the individual leaderboard, shooting 80 on Saturday and recording a two-day score of 151. Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) fired a 73 on Saturday to tie for the fifth-lowest score in a round in Lions history, finishing the event with a score of 153 to come in eighth place. Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) carded an 81 in Saturday's round, finishing with 167 for the tournament and placing 23rd.

Three more Lions competed as individuals again during day two. Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) placed 14th individually in the tournament, shooting 81 on Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 161. Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) tied for 18th place after shooting 79 on Saturday to finish with a combined score of 164. Parker Farnell (Ambler, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) tied for 33rd place, shooting 84 on Saturday and finishing with a total score of 172.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's golf will host Juniata for a dual match on Friday, September 24 at Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona at 3:30 p.m. After that, the Lions will return to tournament play on Sunday, September 26 and Monday, September 27, competing in the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club of Meadville.
