Men’s Golf Resumes Schedule at The Ruckus

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team, coming off of its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship in October, resumed its 2021-22 schedule on Saturday in day one of The Ruckus, presented by Premier Collegiate Tournaments, at Williamsburg National Golf Club's Jamestown Course.

The Lions teed off their spring semester of competition, which will prepare the squad for the NCAA Division III Championships in May, by holding down third place out of 12 teams at the conclusion of the first round of The Ruckus. Penn State Altoona compiled a team score of 312 to rank third, behind first place McDaniel College (298) and second place Stevens Institute of Technology (311).

"It was great to return to competition today, and for a spring debut, we played well," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "We are still working on conditioning, and the wind made things really difficult today. In the last four holes, we dropped too many shots playing back into the wind."

The Lions placed three individuals among the top eight scores on the player leaderboard during Saturday's round.

Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) and Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) each shot a team-low 75 to tie for fourth place out of 63 total competitors. Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) tied for eighth place, shooting 76.

"Really proud of our top three today," said Koehle. "Trey, Andrew, and Logan put us in position to be in the final pairings tomorrow and have an eye on finishing first or second."

Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) tied his season-low by carding 78 in Saturday's round, tying for 15th place individually.

"Nate played awesome out of the individual spot," Koehle said. "He didn't play up to his expectations in the fall, and he came off spring break ready to compete. I look forward to him backing up his good round tomorrow."

Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) shot 86, and Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) finished with a 96.

Penn State Altoona men's golf will wrap up The Ruckus during day two tomorrow, Sunday, March 20. Tee times are expected to begin at 10:00 a.m.
