Golf Takes Third Place in Penn State Division III Challenge

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf placed third out of six teams at the conclusion of this weekend's Penn State Division III Challenge, which was held at Penn State's Blue and White Golf Courses.

Sunday's round was played at the par 71 White Course, where the Lions shot 324 as a team to finish with a two-day score of 645 to take third place. Players battled challenging weather throughout the day.

"This was one of the most difficult conditions – cold, wind, sleet, and rain – that I've ever coached in," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "We didn't deal with the conditions that well, and it resulted in our drop on the scoreboard."

Penn State Harrisburg won the Challenge with a combined score of 631, including 312 during Sunday's round. Penn State Abington was the runner-up with 644.

Penn College placed fourth with 656, Penn State Behrend came in fifth with 657, and Penn State Berks was sixth with 660.

Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) led the way for Penn State Altoona on Sunday, shooting a team-low 77 to finish in a tie for ninth place out of 37 individuals on the player leaderboard with a two-day score of 161. Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) and Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) also tied for ninth individually with 161 apiece, with each golfer shooting 82 in the second round.

Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) carded an 83 on Sunday, compiling a two-day score of 162 to tie for 13th place individually. Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) tied for 22nd place, duplicating his score from the opening round by shooting 84 on Sunday and recording a total score of 168.

Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) competed as an individual for Penn State Altoona on Sunday, shooting 82.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's golf will compete in the Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College, on Monday, April 11 at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg. The event is scheduled to tee off at 11:00 a.m.

"We need to regroup for our next event," Koehle stated. "We lost some momentum that we gained in Virginia, and our opportunities to prep for the NCAAs are dwindling."
