Lions Take Eighth Place After Strong Rounds at The Gauntlet

HARRISBURG, Pa. – After a solid showing in the first round, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team shot an even better round in Monday's action at The Gauntlet, presented by Premier Collegiate Tournaments and hosted at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course.

The Lions shot 294 in Monday's second and final round of the tournament, a score that represents the second-lowest round by the team in program history. Combined with Penn State Altoona's score of 297 in round one, the Lions finished in eighth place out of 14 teams with a two-day score of 591.

"That was a tough field, two days of wet conditions, and an extra-early wake-up call this morning. All in all, when we post two sub-300 rounds, I'm very pleased," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "There are some things we can clean up, but I'm very happy with where we are as a team at this point."

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union), who was named the AMCC Golfer of the Week earlier in the day, shot 70 – 2-under par – in Monday's round to finish with a two-day score of 141. Heffelfinger's score put him in a three-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard out of 75 competitors, and it also ties for the third-lowest score in a round by a player in Lions history.

"Trey was hitting the ball great the last two days. If a couple more putts drop, he could have taken the individual title," said Koehle. "I'm looking forward to a good weekend for him coming up."

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) posted a one-stroke improvement from his first-round score, firing a 74 on Monday to finish with a two-day score of 149 that put him in a tie for 27th place individually. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) duplicated his score from the opening round, carding 75 on Monday and finishing with a total of 150 to tie for 29th place.

Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) shaved two shots off of his first-round score, shooting 75 on Monday to finish with a total of 152 that tied him for 43rd place. Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) shot 78 in Monday's round, compiling a two-day score of 154 to tie for 55th place.

"Joey is really playing solid golf right now, keeping the ball in play and managing his mistakes. He continues to impress in the early going," Koehle stated. "I can't say enough about the impact of the three freshmen. They all rely on great experience and good ball striking to give themselves chances to recover from bogeys."

Penn State Altoona men's golf will look to continue its early momentum this upcoming weekend, when the Lions will partner with nearby Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College to host the annual two-day Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

Day one of the Classic will be hosted by Penn State Altoona on Friday, September 16 at the Lions' home course, Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona. Hosting duties shift to Mount Aloysius on Saturday, September 17, when play will move to Summit Country Club in Cresson.
