Men’s Golf Leads After Day One at Mountain Valley Classic

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf hosted day one of the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic on their home course at Sinking Valley Country Club on Friday, and the Lions finished the round in first place out of 13 teams.

The Lions shot under 300 as a team for the fourth straight round to start their 2022 schedule, compiling a team score of 299 during Friday's round to rank atop the team leaderboard. Penn State Altoona's total of 299 is the ninth-lowest score in a round in program history.

Penn College held second place with 311, and Mount Aloysius College was in third place with 313.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) and Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) each shot an even-par score, firing 72 to finish in a three-way tie for first place out of 67 individuals by the conclusion of day one. Heffelfinger and Toth's scores tie for the fifth-lowest in a round in Lions history, and it also marks a career-low score for Toth.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) shot 76 to tie for ninth place, Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) carded a 79 to tie for 15th place, and Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) scored an 80 to tie for 20th place.

Penn State Altoona's "B" squad also fared well, scoring 318 as a team and placing fifth overall in the standings.

Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) led the Lions' "B" team with a career-low 74 to finish Friday's round in fifth place. Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) tied for 20th place with an 80, and Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) shot 81 to tie for 24th place. Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) rounded out the "B" team by shooting 83 in his first round of the season and finishing the day in a tie for 31st place.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, September 17 for the second and final day of the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic. Play for Saturday's round shifts to Summit Country Club in Cresson, with hosting duties being handed off to Mount Aloysius. Tee times for the Lions are expected to begin at approximately 1:00 p.m.
